hang on I was at that the bloody game, it was one of the first Sunday games, Paul Hammond in goal, Sir Bob was manager not playing, imagine Nobby was asst mgr - he'd hung up his shin kickers by then - you sure it wasn't Dave Swindlehurst or Jeff Johnson who both look similar or maybe the man from Del Monte or the Sandeman's port advert, Milk Tray, the phantom rasperry blower, one of the Mysterons ... was it really the man they call simply ... Mick Hill? I'm still not totally convinced.

Nope - a Tuesday night deffo and deffo Mick Hill scored - ingrained in my memory it is

Looked back at my old progs many years back, saw this name in the team lists, must have watched him play several times - must be the most boring anonymous striker or player we've ever had - read Big Mal got him cheap from Ipswich, but I have no personal recollection of him whatsoever despite being notoriously anal retentive and having 'watched' him several times. Am I being paranoid thinking there may be something a bit X-Files about this. Can someone please put my mind at rest and provide me with substantive proof of Mick Hill's existence, apart from the link below which is a google image of him (apparently).

"I've been going since 1972, a proper Palace anorak then and now, - he played nearly 50 games, and I can't remember him, never have been able to, he made Tom Soares and Andy Dorman look lke Eric cantona in terms of visibility, surely the most anoymous player we ever had. Can anyone tell me anything he did during a particular game so I can say - oh that was him! he's not even in any of my programmes, and I have a few from as far back as 74-75. I think he's been made up for perverse reasons."

"I remember Big Mal had him helicoptered in from Ipswich in order to register in time for a crunch match. I remember thinking he played as though he was jet lagged. I also remeber the jet lag seemed to remain with him for the following 49 games. My best memory of Mick was falling over a lot and winning plenty of vital free kicks and occasional penalties (so not entirely uselss)"

Agreed - I was there and remember it !

I also recall Mick Hill scoring for us against Colchester in the league cup.....although I could be wrong.....we won 3-0 at home in first leg and then lost 1-3 away....and I think he scored that goal

Mick was one of the nicest guys you could meet. He used to come into a shop in Croydon where I worked to buys his clothes. He also used to coach us on a Friday night up at Monks Hill. When he left Palace and went to South Africa he gave me his car. A green Morris Traveller. He sadly passed away a few years ago. Lovely man!

Mick Hill the striker who could not score and had a 70s p*** star haircut and legs longer than a stork. Purchased from Ipswich, it took him nearly 20 plus games before he scored. I think we got him cheap and no wonder, not up there with the most memorable strikers.

I probably did see him but thought it was Dave Swindlehurst having a bad game after having a hair cut.

Mick was a striker of some stature! I recall an F.A.Cup 3rd round home tie v Wrexham...when he met a great cross from the Arthur Wait side at the Holmesdale with a good downward header from barely 8 yards into the muddy goal-mouth...& amazingly the ball bounced back up...& cleared the bar! We lost 2-0...but Mick's astonishment at his bad luck stuck in my memory bank...January '74. Always seemed a bit pedestrian...but whole-hearted & genuine. And he had a classic 70s tache too!

I only met him once when he took a training session when I was a kid but he was a very popular man. He lived in Hereford until his unfortunate early death approximately 5-10 years ago. He has two sons Jon and Dan. Both played football at a regional level for local teams , although Jon did make a couple of league appearances for the now defunct Hereford United , including a live televised game if I remember rightly. He is now a manager for Royal Mail like myself. There was a feature on Mick in the Bournemouth programme which I showed him. He was really chuffed as he and his Dad were very close.
