We like to go out for a pub meal as a family every couple of weeks. One of our number is 17 the rest are a little older. It is becoming incredibly frustrating that we are refused a pint of cider for our 17 year old in every pub. They all know the law, they choose not to operate it. In my view, a young person eating a meal with their parents is in a great position to learn how to be the master of alcohol, not be mastered by it. So here we have exactly the demographic most pubs need, the next generation of drinkers. Yet they choose not to serve one for spurious reasons like they are scared of the Licensing Sergeant - despite the derogation for those eating meals. Or they just say it's the policy of the Landlady. Young people seem to be universally loathed and disregarded in Britain. I wonder why 4 pubs a day are shutting across the UK. And by the way, 16 year olds should be able to vote in the EU referendum, they are the poor sods who will pick up the pieces if it all goes wrong.

Petty, pointless and frustrating. Not what you're after but I'd change to a restaurant and tell the pubs to do one for 12 months

I am now on a mission to shame the local pubs for their lack of family friendliness. What other country would be like that.

Why don't you take him street drinking instead? Sharing a few cans of ''Spesch'', a bottle of 'Buckie' and smoking some fag butts found by a bus stop will be a treasured father-son moment that will bond you for life.

Good thinking Matt, albeit that it's father, mother, sons, daughter and stuffed otter moments. There's a nice sofa underneath the railway bridge at Selhurst most weeks. Why didn't I think of that before.

Why didn't I think of that before. Would suggest that you do this closer to East Croydon Station, maybe down Cherry Orchard Road. Despite it's rural idyll name, it is full of interesting urban sophisticates, who will entertain whilst you drink. There is a 'gentleman of the road' there who will let you hit him for a quid and a woman with few teeth who will perform a filthy frottage upon you on request (or even if you do not request it). Sorry to read about your frustrations. I understand that a drink with a meal at 16 is legal. There should be nothing to stop you having bottles of wine, beer or cider on the table - allowing for each party member to enjoy non standard glass sizes of preferred drinks. Please do your best to include your young family member in alcohol appreciation. Best wishes

Can't 16 year olds only drink Cider, Perry and Mead with a meal? Might struggle to get Mead in a Wetherspoons or a Goose.

Its not hard, Get the rest of the family to go and sit somewhere then go and order the drinks. They are not to know who and what is for who. You could always get a small lemonade to put in front of him but let him drink something else. I get what your doing and did the same with my children, rather they drink in a controlled manner than sneak off and get smashed. Funny enough out of my three 2 dont drink at all now and the other every now and again. I rink enough for all of them. Purely to keep the economy going and helping to stop our local going out of business.
