The classic example of someone taking a metaphor too literally. There are some very well supported arguments about the nature of reality being a 'simulation' ala the Matrix (which is based on Jean Jean Bulldariad 'Simulacra and Simulation').

For example, we know that our own experience is in fact better viewed as a simulation of our external reality constructed from sensory data, than a direct representation of the truth. In effect what we see is constructed from sensory data, memories, expectations and prior experiences (light reflected of objects, creates stimulation of the retina, this reacts to certain frequencies of light, which creates neural impulses in the optic nerves that is then filtered through perception and translated into the experience of vision). This is true of all senses.

So in a manner of speaking, all our existence is at the very least a simulation created by our periphery and central nervous system and brains (its better to see the brain as multiple systems of interaction and functionality, than just one object).

The idea that its a 'Computer Simulation' in a literal sense, is pseudo-science, as one would need to demonstrate the existence of that system, and it would create the immediate question who built it, and are they part of a simulation.

There is some interesting multi-dimension physics on the nature of the universe being 'akin to a hologram' in higher dimensional spaces (but that doesn't mean its a literal hologram just that its a useful metaphor for explaining a very difficult concept to wrap our four dimensional perceptions around). This is heavy maths involved in topological geometry (like PHD level maths).
