Just been defrauded on my bank account. Was trying to buy something and card declined. Checked my balance and a euro over my overdraft. All happened within the last 48hrs. I haven't lost a lot as I didn't have a lot but still it's a few hundred.
Now, I would just think 'Oh, I'm a victim of fraud' (and yes I have reported it) but it also happened to my partner and mother-in-law who are with the same bank. A national one in Ireland; Bank of Ireland.[And , no, I don't use the same accounts or even computer or network as them]
Makes me suspicious and angry that there are so many victims - I can't think the bank's security is good enough. I will see what the bank has to say but they had better refund most of my money as I believe they are at fault.
I wonder how many people have experienced this (or even just put some witty put down or ask for my pin etc.)?

I've had my credit card done twice. One of the times they had bought a huge number of tickets to a Coldplay concert. I had a good chuckle with the fraud department about that not being me.

I have also had my card stopped several times for genuine use. I was at a train station once with 10 minutes til my train and my card was declined. Had to do the usual going through the list of transactions to say which were and weren't me. One of the ones on the list was obviously a p*rnographic website to which I had to just front it out and go "yep, that was me". I could tell the next couple of mundane transactions on the list were just read out to gloss over what I had just confessed to.

Mine was done a few months ago. Account was emptied, someone in Dublin had purchased loads of hampers or something.

Never been there and got refunded all the money the same day I popped into the bank and sorted it out.

Makes me wonder how they got my details tho as it was a website I've never heard of and not even in England.

got credit card done a few times, recently in carver city minnesota, in a 7-11 type store, other time was somewhere in canada where i apparently purchased about 10 metric tonnes of sand, funny enough both times the bank cancelled the transactions, sadly it happens a lot, i wont use my debit card online or at petrol stations..

Surely they had best refund all of your money?

Anytime something has happened on my accounts I've got it back in full.

Once was a load of stuff in NY and the another was some div who put through hundreds of pounds worth of mobile phones, at the place I'd got my contract. He/she must've really hard to trace...

First Direct are shockers for doing that and my card was declined several times which I found rather embarrassing. It seems that they have flags that pop up if you buy certain things over the internet with anything mobile phone related being one of them.

In the end I told them that if it happened one more time I would change both my personal and business bank accounts and they agreed to waive all security checks if the amount is under £50 and I've never had any problems since

How the hell did the bank fall for that one?

I had mine blocked once for spending £3.50 or so in Sainsbury's despite shopping for my lunch in there every day.

When I was buying an engagement ring for my Mrs I phoned them up to say I was going to be spending a few quid and could they add a note to my account to not block my card. They said they couldn't do that, it was pot luck but if it got declined just to phone them from the jewellery shop. I was so convinced it'd happen I told the staff in the shop that there was every chance my card would be blocked. It wasn't though. Evidently buying expensive engagement rings is less suspicious than a meal deal.

I have a separate current account that I use for online dealings, in which I only ever keep the funds required for exactly this reason

You've just reminded me that I had a weird one similar to that once. It was after a few small amounts spent in Purley which they deemed to be suspicious activity, despite my business being there and god knows how many hundreds of transactions in the town in the past.

When I bought a car on my debit card, nothing.

My wife used to work for Mastercard in system development, initially on authorizations and then on products to help banks / credit card companies reduce fraud. She was always telling me about how quickly hackers come up with strategies to circumvent any new security measures, even within weeks of them being implemented. She has had her card cloned and her paypal account hacked, so even if you are really in the know you are vulnerable, if that is any consolation.

Also I am pretty sure that the bank will refund you in almost all circumstances when it is fraud, unless you disclosed your pin or your internet banking details.
