Chelsea let in goals en masse before they changed to 3 at the back with a 5 man midfield. Can the same work for Palace? Tomkins/Dann/Delaney at the back, a midfield of Ward, Cabaye, MacArthur, Chungy/Ledley, Puncheon with trio of Zaha/Benteke/Townsend on top. Think it could work out fine if the players know their jobs and start working as a unit. Anyone agree?

A 3-5-3? Could be tricky if the referee can count.

You are absolutely right - meant Zaha/Benteke top and Townsend at the moment a benchwarmer. Guess even Andre Mariner is able to count to 11.

Don't be too sure

3-5-2 is one of the least popular systems with good reason; it's very difficult to perfect and I don't think we have the personnel to do it. Let's face it, our lot are now struggling with 4-2-3-1, which we've been playing for ages. I don't think we've two players who could be effective wing-backs and I've seen the argument, when this has been discussed previously, that we could instead have a midfield player who drops into a back four when we're defending. I can't see that working either as we're confused enough now when defending, without any more complications. My suggestion would be to stop playing Kelly out of position and use Fryers instead and make our mind up if it's going to be Dann/Tomkins or Dann/Delaney.

3-4-3 has worked well for Chelsea and Moses has been a revelation at right wing back.

We could do the same with maybe Zaha as right wing back and have a fluid 3 upfront with 2 playing off Benteke e.g. Punch and Townsend and maybe Remy when/if fit.

3 centre backs could be Damo on left Dann in middle and Tomkins or Wardy right side (Tomkins plays right back too so would be at home).

Not sure who could play left wing back - maybe Fyers, but other than that I do think we have the personnel to make this work.

I'd drop Ledley for a forward and play 4-4-2 but we don't have another forward to compliment Benteke till Remy is fit.

I think that would work a lot better for us, although it would probably need to be a 4-4-1-1 so we're not overrun in midfield. I suppose McArthur could fill in as a no.10 pending the availability of Remy?

With a fit Papa maybe, but I can't really see Lee, Townsend or Zaha really having the defensive chops to make it work.

With Ward and Papa as wingbacks, it could work, as I think both link up well with Townsend and Zaha. With Ledley, Puncheon and McArthur across the centre (and likely Remi and Benetke upfront).

Kelly, Dann and Tompkins in a back three - Maybe not enough pace.

Our problems, this season, unlike the last three seasons, are defensive. I think we're getting forward well, and generally ok in front of goal, but we're too sloppy at the back.

Conte understands that system and I'm sure he would have been coaching that system with the players probably from when he started there so well before they actually started playing it; what 3/4 weeks ago.

I understand we played it once or twice on the pre-season tour but I can't see any indication that is the system that Pardew has put much thought into playing. You can't just suddenly start playing an entirely different system and I don't think we have the right players to play it anyway, especially with Souare out; being the only real candidate for the LWB position.

3 at the back means having three defenders who are capable on the ball and are positionally excellent, this is the most important part of this tactic. We most likely would get beat by very high scores

If we're going to play a 3-5-2 then it would have to be Wilf and Townsend as the full backs. Cabaye McArthur Puncheon middle. Who up top with Benteke exactly? Gayle? Oh wait.

Don't think it would work.

..+ our forward players need to get involved in defending better, way too lackadaisical.
