Jesus - those suggestions are completely OTT for online banking or for most people regardless.

The security afforded by online banking sites is more than adequate for Joe Bloggs. Your connection to your bank is encrypted and secure.

You need to be sensible; don't click links in emails that you weren't expecting etc (but if you did that, a VPN wouldn't help you anyway) and don't store your passwords on your computer in text files.

A VPN makes it look like you're not who you are but you pay for the privilege. I use one but for far more techie reasons.

TOR is a US government developed anonymisation network that routes your traffic through loads of other people, making it nearly impossible to trace you. It will slow down your web browsing SIGNIFICANTLY. Again, I have used it in the past for specific reasons.

Depending on who you bank with, there is some software that Santander and others called "Rapport" which will give you some extra banking protection.

Draw out all your money and keep it under your bed in a strong box.

Get your self a shotgun and sit on top of the bed with the shotgun loaded and pointed at the door.

VPN is more for accessing sights when you are abroad. Some uk websites (Virgin Media) And gambling sites you cannot access when in certain countries. A VPN will bypass this.
Whoever is giving you advice is giving you real overkill information. If your worried go to PC World they are really good at giving you thev advice you need and will help you.

Although, in fairness to the OP, neither a VPN or TOR connection would have helped.

The truth probably is, that whilst these steps might add some protection, the reality is that the security at the other end tends to be much more the issue with hacking. And even then, you tend to find that most big hacks have some 'inside help' or social engineering.

In protecting your own details, a firewall, some good spyware and malware protection is probably better than a VPN or TOR (you're more likely to lose passwords to keyloggers apps than interception across the network).

Make sure you don't use the same password across all your accounts (i.e. use a different password for very important stuff like your bank accounts, than you do for your internet mail account.
