It's that time and my current one was purchased on the back of a suggestion I read on here and has been just the job, so hit me with your wonder, good people.

I reckon £400 or thereabouts should meet my needs, but will happily pay more if the advantages make it obviously worthwhile (They'd need to be fairly mind-blowing, though. Perhaps the online p*** starlets could leap hungrily from the screen to nosh me off? Or at least talk to me without vomiting or laughing at my genitals. That sort of thing.) I don't much game, so that's not really important. I do stream a bit of NFL so handy to make that look all razzamatazzy perhaps. Not critical though. Just the usual really - internet, email (lots), Excel/Office (lots), videos and music. Y'know...

Whaddya say? (Black Friday a factor? (I'd overlooked that - had been thinking I'd wait for January sales.))

I'll have a look for you when I get home from work, but as a starting piece of advice, do NOT buy anything of the s***e they sell in PC World.

That's extremely kind of you, much obliged. I didn't know to swerve PC World, thanks. (I'm a moderate tech-cretin, by the way. I understand the very basics - jpeg, routers, servers etc., and probably once knew what HTML meant - but your average 8-year-old finds me laughably inept. On so many levels.)

I think HP kit is good and guarantee support on mine ok, the most important thing is to have an I5 processor or I7 if possible - pc,s of less are under-powered IMO pay a bit extra if you need to rather than have weak performance and connections that will drive you mad.

Good luck.

You can get this laptop for £410.

I just briefly checked John Lewis as you get a 2 year guarantee which is a good bonus in case anything goes wrong with it. It definitely has all the specs you would need for your use. Just an example.

Spent £229 on a Lenovo at Staples, can't tell you the spec or anything but I can stream live tv & videos in HD and can surf the net, don't need it for anything other than that.

I have a Lenovo paid £449 for it last year it is excellent and does everything you need it to. Price you pay depends on what you want on it and what you need it to do. Despite the suggestion of swerving PC World i went there had a chat with one of their guys and he tailored a package that suited me. You dont have to buy it there but you can get their reccomendations then go elsewhere if you want but im happy with my laptop and i use it for business quite a bit.

Thanks for all the ideas - very helpful and much appreciated. (Automatic John Lewis cover seems a clever shout.)

This I5 vs. I7 business: I assume I7 is better? If so, should I look to pay the extra for this or would it be an unnecessary additional expense with I5 being perfectly sufficient?

For your use, i5 processor is totally fine. My dads laptop has an i3 processor and he streams some football and watches video completely smoothly.

pcspecialist are the best all round pc/laptop provider I have found. I've used them 3 times now, one pc, two laptops. If you're not hardware savvy, just stick to the pre-built ones, but you can upgrade any of the components in the build (at a cost, takes longer to deliver).

This pre-built machine will stream well and do all the necessary day-to-day humdrum:

Nice work, thanks. i5 it is. I reckon I'm almost there.

From what I can find, these seem chief candidates (I shall also check out pcspecialist) - basically slightly different versions of Lenovo, HP, & Acer Aspire:

I'm tempted by the John Lewis Lenovo one as that was recommended above by someone much more in the know than me, plus the automatic 2-year-warranty wheeze. But the other Lenovo option has a higher model no. (if that's what it is) - does this matter? (I am painfully aware that both this observation and description confirm me as one of the country's foremost gormless gits.) It also means PCWorld is swerved - preferred if all else is equal. However my current laptop is an Acer Aspire I bought (as advised here) through ebuyer, and this proved excellent all round.

So which? (It's the John Lewis Lenovo, innit? Is it? Yeah. Is it?)
