Horrific scenes coming out of the City following the attempted evacuation.

A humanitarian disaster.

What Assad and Russia are doing has been disgusting but they will look on it as a job done.

The gov forces b'stards torture and kill children and have been since 2011.

The West's lack of enthusiasm to help the Syrian people at the beginning although mischievously encouraging the uprising was very wrong.

No IS in Syria back then either.

And yet it was the left who opposed intervention at every turn.

Looks like that oil pipeline from Iraq to Turkey isn't going to be built after all.

All those innocent people killed in what - 5 years? - of proxy war for oil and arms dealing $$$.

No winners on any side in this and a whole lot of blood on a whole lot of hands in both East and West.

Well I think Simon's head is large; always involved in espionage. (Name that tune)

Many a national govt has proven to be utterly useless and incapable of responding to such an appalling MAN-MADE humanitarian disaster. As for the season of goodwill.......

Intervening to unseat unpopular and despotic tyrants in the Middle East hasn't exactly worked out well in the past. Just exchanging a brutal dictatorship for anarchy and confusion, with similar death tolls. I don't really see how intervening changes anything, other than creating further instability in an already volatile region.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

Our colonial intervention, the lines in the sand, did change everything for the future in the region tbf.

Too fvcked up now to do anything about it but the mess is not dissimilar to Bosnia 92-95. Maybe a tiny glimmer once war fatigue set's in. Though, obviously, Vladimir has stamina to burn still. The macho prick.

As I can see you're saying, that was then, Kermie. But wouldn't intervention by the West now be seen as something similar? Putin has taken the view that the long term threat is islamism (as represented by the 'rebels') and has acted accordingly.

The US went into Iraq (and other places) to export 'democracy' but there's just no way you're going to get stability when a system gets imposed on the population by a power that represents everything they hate. The whole f*cking region is a basket case.

All of this 'it is our fault' for continued bloodshed and instability in the Middle East is hand wringing, self hating, pomposity.

The fact is that there are plenty of examples of countries that have flourished following independence and a slew that have wasted the opportunity.

The Middle East is a particularly mute point. How come Israel developed quickly into an oasis of democracy in an otherwise desert of domestic oppression? Israel was in 1948 a s*** hole. Now it is flourishing. Others in the region, who have received significant aid from the West, are still stuck in a a cycle of self recrimination, violence and blame-the-west.

The irony for me is that the Middle East was at the forefront of trade, civic development and science in the Middle Ages yet has allowed itself to sink into being a pre-historic bloodbath.
