Just watched the 30 min programme this evening on SS1. He still loves Palace despite his successes and failures during his tenure. An interesting watch.

I always kind of liked him. He was a bit of a t*** but he put a lot of money where his mouth was and a lot of what he did about football still RU s true. His book is worth a read.

I dispute that because one of the necessary evils of football is paying agents. He didn't want to pay them at all if he could and where did it get him and us? Relegated after buying some players who had no influence on the season at all. Oh, we had the money or he wouldn't have bid for neil Ashton in January for about £7mil. After that he then threw the kitchen sink to get back up. Win his battles? The same stuff carries on and did so for 9 years without us in the top league. Nobody cared.

Made me cringe but I was and am grateful he stepped in because admin 1 went on for a long time and we were the 1st for a long time so anything could've happened. We were nearly having any league footballers turning up for a game at selhurst in CPFC shirts with a different sponsor every week. Those shirts have to resurface some day. The Higgingbottom goal or those morons near Canary Wharf equalising not happening could've changed a lot but it always felt like chance all the time. The feeling after the Watford 1st leg semi the next season was another big nail. But he did bankroll that season back in the 2nd tier and we should've gone back up but from memory AJ got injured. He shouldn't have treated the walk up fans so badly. Bad move. You need to grow them and not turn them away. Prices under Parish in 2010 were something like the same as 5 years before or even less. I always felt like we were hitting the headlines but with no end result. Statements made but with no purpose or benefit.

The truth didn't get much more 'murky' than 'Crystal Palace and Selhurst Park reunited' did it? We ended up with nothing to show for that season in the PL, partly due to that (supposedly) principled, but ultimately pointless, stand on agents fees. If we'd have played 'the game' that season (and I'm sorry, but you have to if you want to survive) we could have most likely assembled a team to keep us up (bearing in mind the narrow margin by which we were relegated on the last day) and then who knows what? It always seemed like a lot of noise with little purpose with SJ. He saved the club, for which we all thank him, but he then ran it into the ground. We're lucky that that sort of ownership is a thing of the past.

Seem to remember we had the chance to sign Tim Cahill but he refused to pay his agents fees. He went to Everton and we went down on the last day. Can't help but think that would have made the difference and the player who became my favourite player in the PL and my national team hero never played for us.

do people beleive that tim cahill was actually ever going to join us once big clubs like everton got involved. what hurt us more than anything that season was julian grey leaving on a free to brum, becasue he was absolutly brilliant during the promotion season

He was a tw@t and a liar as well at points. And a huge amount of the issues we encountered were as a result of his massive ego. But I couldn't help but feel affinity with him. He was clearly a bit of a chancer but also loved the club. I met him a couple of times after and he was always friendly and always spoke affectionately of the club. He just made some very poor mistakes - but it cost him a fortune, it isn't like he didn't suffer personally. Wasn't it Dean Ashton not Neil Ashton? Think Neil Ashton is the palace fan/journalist. Ashton didn't join us because Gradi told him to join Norwich. And Cahill was never interested in joining us, knuckle draggers just needed us to drive up interest so bigger boys came calling.
