I think the burden of being captain is majorley affecting his game. He just isn't the same player since being appointed and yesterday against Arsenal he carried this on. Just not at the races and his body language said everything. I would give it it to Damo. Nothing personal but I just want to see him get back to his previous form.

Bring back Brolin

I don't think he's fit or is carrying a knock. Would strip him of the armband as this could really ruin him. What we need is more leaders throughout.

What is noticeable about Delaney is that he is one of the first to come over and applaud the support for their efforts, win lose or draw. Same way that Jedinak did, that's what being a captain is all about. Bring that unity back into the fanbase and players

I don't get this 'they are not fit' i know Pardew paid lip service to pre-season which left us unprepared at the start of the season, but they have since played 19 league games plus a couple of cup games. They must be bloody fit!!!!!

Performances in the final 30 minutes of games seems to suggest otherwise.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

Don't think Damo should have it.

The captain needs to be on the pitch and I don't think he should be a regular starter. Not good enough anymore.

Not many alternatives.

MacArthur on the pitch is probably the most influential and vocal, his effort and commitment are second to none, but he isn't the right character he is too much of a joker and behind the scenes is one of the clubs clowns in training. Much loved guy but can't put the fear of god in to players like Jedi or Michael Hughes did.

Two basis choices

Full Captain - like Jedi

Figurehead Captain - Scott Dann

With Jedi there was leadership as a constant undercurrent. Poor Scott seems to need to focus on Captain duties.

With Jedi there were a number of sub-captains - who like King Arthur's Round Table gave leadership when needed in their area.

I suspect that the Armband is calling on Scott for action in one direction leading him to neglect other area. If Sam can identify the "junior captains" - Scott, Damo, jimmy Mac, Wayne (at times) among others, and get them giving effective motivation on the pitch the actual captain would be immaterial. Having someone like Zaki Fryers (who goes up and down the pitch - but seems not to be vital could be an opposition confusing option.

I leave my fellow contributors to discern sense.

This may be considered heresy, but I felt Jedi was not a good captain during his last year with us - especially with his deteriorating form and disciplinary record.

Dann has struggled since coming back from injury. I think he may have been rushed back because we struggled without him. However I do not feel the captain duties weigh him down and would give him more time. I thought Dann and the team showed fight against Hull after the penalty decision and going behind. Delaney will not play most weeks so could not be captain; same goes for Ledley (although he'll get more game time) - they could be deputies.

What the team needs is a confidence boost - it will be interesting to see if BFS can instil this and create a positive culture or if the team don't respond and their heads drop. I actually thought the team had been still been showing spirit and pulling together - just some dreadful defensive lapses.

If the worst came to the worst, perhaps we could buy back Jedi (plus one or two of our other recent departees)

One player who definitely needs to be well-captained is Punch.

Without constant encouragement, he seems to lose heart and his influence on play wanes.

Overall, the side lacks urgency and fight - traits we all admired in Joniesta (and Bobby Kellard)

If you're looking for a leader then Flamini is the only one that fits the bill. Everyone else just looks at each other, Flamini communicates and keeps the rest focused. Not suggesting he gets the armband but at least there's a leader in there now.

Delaney was a fine captain in the absence of Jedinak last year, Pardew was stupid to change it.
