Man is the most insane species. He worships an invisible God and destroys a visible Nature. Unaware that this Nature he’s destroying is this God he’s worshipping.

I'm much more of a fan of written poetry rather than spoken, but I am enjoying these links.

Poetry, spoken word, seems to be enjoying a bit of popularity of late.

Worth listening to George the Poet. Very real.
Also I think Kate Tempest will be poet laureate one day.

My favourite poem....

I'm a Scot and I'm married, two things I cant help.
I'm married - but I have no wife -
For she bolted and left me - but that's nothing new,
It happens sa often in life.
So I journeyed to London, for that's where she'd gone
With her lover to hide her disgrace,
And though London's a big town I swore I'd not rest
Till I'd searched every street in the place.
And I tramped - how I tramped - weary mile upon mile
Till exhausted and ready ta drop.
I would not give in, so I climbed on a bus,
And took a front seat on the top.
We came to a halt in a bright lit square,
To my joy, there ma lassie I spied,
Looking weary and worn, but thank heaven - alone -
From my heart 'Maggie, Maggie' I cried.
She gasped with delight as I rose from ma seat,
But a harrowing thought made me wince.
I couldna get off - for I'd just paid ma fare -
And I've never caught sight of her since.

I recently went to the Madness weekender in Minehead and amongst the saturday/sunday afternoon comedians was a comedy poet.

Now, it was a bad choice for such a weekend as eveyrone is just there for the cheap laughs etc but this guy was SO unfunny it was painful. Most people walked out of his act it was that bad.

I wonder if he's still there??

Clinton is Clinton. I have known him for a long time, I know his mother... Simon Jordan

Good choices. I'm a massive fan of Larkin, the Beats and TS Eliot, but love John Cooper Clark and Wendy Cope (who is a bit Betjeman).

"Poetry should play hopscotch in the 6pm streets and look for jinks in other people's dustbins. At dawn it should leave the bedroom and catch the first bus home to its wife. At dusk it should chatup a girl nobody wants. It should be seen standing on the ledge of a skyscraper, on a bridge with a brick tied around its heart. It is the monster hiding in a child's dark room, it is the scar on a beautiful man's face. It is the last blade of grass being picked from the city park."

[last lines from 'Prosepoem Towards a Definition of Itself' by Brain Patten]

I don't mean to digress (sorry OP) but I love a good audio book. As much as I don't like Steve Coogan, the audio book of "I, Partridge" had me in stitches!
