When you really boil it down do you ever ask yourself why you go to watch football ?

Do you want to watch your team over the next ten years playing largely defensive football in the premier league finishing between 10th and 17th with the occasional win over one of the big lads ?

I don't

I honestly go to football to watch exciting players playing nice football. Whatever division.

Yes I want to compete and be successful but let's face it without a billion pound owner the top 6 in the top league (Leicester aside) is not really going to happen.

I would rather be a Norwich, Newcastle in the champs than a Stoke, West Brom in the prem.

My reasons are complex and many. Love it when we win, love freak results against sides we aren't expected to win against.

The more games I come to the more I want to come if that makes sense. Really going to miss the next two weeks of no football. Same when the season ends.

Meeting new friends which I have only done this year and now truly have a great feel of palace feeling like a family in that sense.

My brother and I have truly bonded and grown closer since we have gone to lots of games together.

It's an escape. It's a few hours escape from being someone's mum, someone's, daughter , from responsibility and expectation. I can be me. I can enjoy myself (sometimes) I can express my true emotions.

I go for the day out.

Result matters of course, but it doesn't ruin the day for me. If it was about results we'd all have given up by now wouldn't we?

But in answer to your point about being a Norwich or a Newcastle in the championship, everyone in the championship wants to be in the premiership don't they? Then when they get there they realise they'll lose more than they win and it will mostly be depressing.

And the money? Everyone says its great to be in the premier league because of the money for the club? Well it means nothing to the fans does it? We just see prices go up.

I watched more games in the championship than I do now. It's easier to get tickets and you can normally decide on the day.

That's my view anyway.

To break away from the normal every day routine , to meet up with mates, drink and gamble. Watch the club I love that represents where I'm from, to feel the buzz of winning.

Love going to home and away games, love the atmosphere, anticipation and excitement before the game, it's a great escape from the norm and you can just be yourself, nearly always meet up with my son or friends at the ground (crystals or the red n blue bar) and then there's the rollercoaster ride! Some awesome games .... Liverpool at home and anyone who went Sheffield Wednesday away! What a game and what fun we had getting in to the ground and getting out! Lol

Nothing beats watching a game live. Even the s***e ones are good as you can still let off steam and have a laugh with those around you.
No matter what division I'll be there. I go cos I support Crystal Palace, but like the OP I've had this battle with the question 20 wins a season in the championship or 10 in the premier league/division 1 for years. Think I prefer winning more, but I also want to play Charlton, Millwall and Brighton. No point in a rivalry if you never play each other.

Definitely for the escape. Escape to hell most games at the minute.
Only reason I have for staying in the Prem is the risk to the club of failing to keep the books balanced if we go down. We were on the brink of losing our club not so long ago and that is the worst feeling I've ever had from football, far worse than falling from the old first to the third division the first time we managed to stay for 4 years in the top flight.

Because I've been going 42 years now and I don't know how to stop, everything is against me now, I work Friday night, I'm marooned down in Kent when I used to live near the ground, I hate mercenary players and the money business and greed side of the modern game,,,,and no matter how s*** we are, I just can't stop, it's like a drug I suppose, after all these years I go still hoping those over paid, prima donna's who are briefly wearing the shirt I've been watching for most of my life can give me a buzz with a win every now and then!!!

i'm a mix of all of the above, going for so long I wouldn't know what to do otherwise, an escape from day to day life where I can have a few (too many) pints with the lads and like others, over the years have met a good few people from the surrounding seats that even when times are bad pitch-wise we tend to have a laugh.

Occasionally, even enjoy the football too.
