Just bought a virgin box. If you are going to record a program do you need to have the box on?

It doesn't need to be on as such - it'll record if it's in standby but obviously it won't do jack if it's disconnected from the mains.

If it's a Tivo box of course... ordinary Virgin boxes do not record. If you forget to record something you can go back and watch it on "Catch-Up" TV by scrolling back to the programme on the schedule banner (if it has a C symbol you can watch it again).

My Mrs watches TV in the kitchen on a basic Virgin box (ooh err mrs) and might have liked to record "Escape to the Country" or "Homes under the hammer"... she loves 'em!

Thanks Hoof, I am paying for 4 Tivo boxes and they are 2-3 years old, was going to tell them to cancel my subscription as i want Skys Q System in the hope they upgrade mine to keep me as a customer. That would be the plan if i could get through on their s***e phone system.
