I'm not getting this phenomenon so need some direction

Seems you can't escape from hearing about him as if he's the resurrection of christ, I almost find the radio nauseating now with every station creaming themselves over him.

Is it, as I suspect, because he has a boy next door, clean cut image and his music has a wider appeal as it is generally over produced sanitized pop and he is being heavily pushed by a record label?

Or is he genuinely talented and worth getting on the bandwagon? It's that there's nothing edgy about him or his sounds that grabs my instant appeal

Ahhhh.... heart skipped a beat there.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

Thank goodness I am not the only one who fails to be impressed by him.

I think too much of it has to do with pure luck - there are just so many other talented singer/songwriter/musicians out there who never get a chance, but as you say, record company money doesn't just talk it shouts from the rooftops of every radio station.

This is one of my favourite local(ish) guys - him, an electro-acoustic and a mindboggling block of loops....sound quality not the best, but what could this guy produce in a decent studio (and check out his Sultans of Swing at around 15.30) - Ed Sheeran eat you heart out!

Because I hate "Shape of you" so much I have to sing "I'm in love with a shapely Jew" just to keep myself amused when it's stuck in my head.

The definition of mediocrity. Not bad, but its true flaw is not being any good. A technically skilled musician and decent singer who lacks any real substance as a lyricist, which if you're a singer-songwriter is a bad trait.

Dylan on the other hand, was not a great musician or singer by any imagination, but a superb lyricist and innovator. You can always hire band members to fill in, but really great lyricists are difficult as f**k to come by.

Whilst I think Dylan, became an excellent musician and decent enough singer with time, people rarely improve their capacity as a lyricist significantly over time.

Basically, if you can't write poetry or at least understand it, you're f**ked as a singer-songwriter to be mediocre - because you can't really rely on the musical sounds and style to excel.

The requirements to have a top 10 hit these days are a lot different to they were in my day. You only have to sell about 5 copies of your song on iTunes and you have a number 1 hit. Then next week someone else is at number 1. And your song can be a load of tepid guff.

Fat girl made good. It just made for a good story. That's the society we're in now. Patronising. She does have a good voice though, but it's just a shame that she seems perpetually fed up.

Same syndrome. She's got a stunning voice, but lacks the capacity to really write the right kind of song. She might seem perpetually fed up, but Leonard Cohen had half the voice, but all the beautiful melancholy.

Nick Cave, decent voice, but f**k me that man can write a song, that's dark, innovative and compelling. As opposed to whiny, self pitying bollocks.

Well he can write a dark and innovative song (along with his musicians) that fits his voice as well.
