Next season we'll have 3 quality left backs.
Patrick van Aanholt, Pape Souaré, Jeffrey Schlupp

Who should be first choice?

After that horrible injury there must be at least a chance that Souare won't get back to where he was. Hope that's not the case, obviously.

I think Souare would be first choice and if Zaha goes(hopefully not) Van Aanholt or Schlupp can play on the left wing.

Speroni would've saved it!

I think Sam favours VA and will continue to do so even if Papa returns.

I would say :-

1. Van Aanholt
2. Schlupp
3. Souare

However, I think Souare maybe finished at the top level. I was in a car accident last year, and broke my leg and ankle. They have never been as strong as they were before.

I see that he broke his thigh bone and having to be airlifted to hospital means it was bad. With lesser injuries (i.e. hamstring), some players never come back as before.

Might not be the most popular view but I'm a little disappointed with Schlupp. He definitely seems second choice and is a very decent back up, but I was hoping he would have more of an offensive impact. And he looks pretty light in the tackle. For me PVA is number one with Schlupp a backup, doubt we will see papa for a while.

Still left back looks healthy. It's the other flank that really is the major concern.

I'd agree. He turns the ball over too often. If (a big if) Souare is looking good pre-season I would definitely think they should look to ship Schlupp -if we could get back his transfer price - and use the money elsewhere

I think PVA is a Left Back whereas Schlupp is more of a winger who can play left back.

the dignified don't even enter in the game

Haven't read through the posts, however my very brief summary.
IMO neither schlupp or pva are complete players, it's like we've spent 25M on two winger-come-full-backs, niether of whom have proved they are defensively sound and niether of whom are likely to ever keep wilf or andros out the wide spots. The signings of both were ways to a means of us staying up, a slight overkill imo with the added bonus of versitilty. I'm not saying neither cannot be decent, or that we were wrong to get them both in(we are after all looking like staying up) however in terms of a left back, pape is superior to both by some margin and a snip at the 3M(?) we paid Lille for him, especially given the fee for the other two! Pape all day in my book, without question. What's the latest on his recovery btw?

I actually rate PVA as a full back but agree re Schlupp. We haven't seen Souare in a while but I always felt him to be a bit rash and again like the other two, better going forward as well. Hopefully with PVA fit, Schlupp can have a chance to impress as a winger hopefully he makes a better winger than fullback.

If only we had the same depth of choice for right back, rather than one who is probably just about good enough for back up.

IMO I think pretty much every Full back in the world is like that. It's very rare to find one that is very good at doing both the attacking and defensive roles as (like Jamie Carragher once said), a full back is either a failed winger or failed centre half.. I think it's always weighing up what and how much you are willing to sacrifice each ability..

We're the Arthur over ere!

Said it before we signed him and repeat gladly - 12 mill. for Schlupp was madness. Big, quick but very little football brain and runs into trouble again and again. PVA any given time...
