The rise of the alt-left

There's this..in my opinion... great freelance journalist on YouTube called Tim Pool. Anyway he's just released a video where he talks about his experiences with people he calls the 'alt left' and how he defines them. He also talks about other groups and the nature of labels and how they can be correctly or incorrectly applied. Interesting stuff, I'd recommend giving it a watch.

some t*at sitting in his bedroom worring about his political identity is of zero importance , the political game is controlled by the banks who provide money to there selected puppets ,there is no left or right in politics [that matters] that is just an illusion ,the nature of government is private money being lent to governments, who are then ran by there selected actors trump,clintons ,obama etc and the same applies world wide ,who ever you vote for you will get the government Edited by miss smith (01 May 2017 5.26am) Edited by miss smith (01 May 2017 5.27am)

I think this guy is fairly earnest and genuine, but there's a huge issue IMO with what he's saying. First, he claims that the 'alt-left' is uninterested in facts, but his classification of them has no statistical backing. He uses one article, one picture, then some anecdote about a person he met. Measuring the alt-right is much easier because you actually have a large group of people who define themselves by it. No one (that I've ever come across) calls themselves alt-left. He points out, fairly I feel, that the assumption that all young Trump voters are alt-right is innaccurate, then just lumps a huge, unspecified group of diverse political range under one blanket term he just pulls out of his arse. I think people who use terms like 'alt-left' or 'populist left' are usually people who want to claim that Corbyn voters are basically the same as Trump voters, which to my mind is just completely politically ignorant. During Brexit, a study showed that all fake news producing twitter bots were pro Brexit. During the American election, they were nearly all for Trump. People like Richard Spenser and Milo have explicitly alligned themselves with post-modern theories that deride factual analysis. A similar movement on the left just doesn't exist. Maybe she should stand with you in your party. What is that the kind of society you want then? Think it but not say it? Also, I don't think that saying that someone sounds like they are on medication is exactly that terrible anyway.

Oh well I thought it was interesting. Labels. People seem obsessed with them these days. It just makes people attracted to established opinions rather than forming their own. It's like being in a club, in so much as it makes people feel part of something and more important than they are. It also creates more division.

Maybe a few...But I don't see Corbyn as supporting the alt-left as described. He's not against free speech. I think you are misunderstanding what he is saying. It's not as though he's invented the term. He's describing elements within anti fascist movements I think. Those types of people who close down the free speech of those they don't like...sometimes violently as we saw at Berkeley....The 'punch a Nazi' morons. Though as he correctly stated it may be true that just like the term alt-right was misapplied it will probably happen that this term will be misapplied. Some people with agendas aren't always fair. Also I think you are seriously deluded if you think 'fake news' is just pro Trump or Brexit. Surely you recognise that it's on both sides of the argument as that is human nature....and the majority of the media isn't exactly pro Trump. Didn't the the fact-checking site Snopes tell the BBC recently that they have debunked many more anti-Republican party stories than pro-Republican ones.
