Presuming we stay up. Who at what needs upgrading? Tieing Wilf down to a new contract and signing Sakho is the most important bit of business for me in the summer, but in addition I'd say we now need to upgrade

Ward at Right Back
Hennessey at Goalkeeper
Puncheon attacking midfielder (not 1 goal this season)
and probably two strikers considering we'll probably be releasing Campbell and sending Remy back.

Effectively 5 new signings that can go straight into the first 11.

But we need to improve the support cast too. Our 1st 11 is really not bad. Our problem is we are always a couple of injuries from disaster.

If you improve the first 11 that automatically improves the support cast, because the player they replace moves to the bench , an example of this was when we had the likes of McCarthur and dann on the bench before injuries.

The issue is squad depth. Sure, we have been horrendously unlucky with injuries (3 cbs is silly) and the extent of that can be hard to mitigate. But some of those even on the fringes of the first xi just aren't strong enough for us to be a mid-table PL side consistently. I said to a friend of mine that our first XI is top-half standard, 2nd XI relegation fodder.

The difficulty is signing players to an unfashionable club like ours who are good enough to step into the first XI but also willing to not start every week. In a way it's easier to sign (in my mind) big players like Cabaye and Benteke if you can tell them you're building a team round them and play them every week.

So let's look at this from a slightly different angle. Out of our current squad, who are nailed-on for the starting XI?

I'd suggest:

Tomkins
Van Aanholt
Luka
Cabaye
Zaha
Townsend
Benteke

There or thereabouts:

Hennessey
Schlupp
Dann
Ward
Wickham
Puncheon
McArthur
Kelly

In bold are those positions could do with an upgrade. The others need some competition.

Can't see any future for:

Mutch
Ledley
Lee
Campbell
Fryers
Mandanda
Sako
Delaney
Speroni
Flamini
Williams
J Benteke

Souare - impossible to say what will happen

^^^^^^

Yep. And seeing that has just clarified that half of our squad are not the required standard for The Prem and how fortunate we are to be in the position we find ourselves in considering our weakness.

One point against Hull for safety? Very lucky indeed.

Are you Pardew?

We need depth. If he isn't a starter he's good depth after a bit of game time. The bloke hasn't played for a while and you want him out.

You've said who and what, so I am going to say:
Stadium capacity
Youth setup
The size of the physio room

Sounds like a Football Manager kinda comment. But I am quite sincere. I tend to agree with most of the comments about players.

Totally agree. I know he is "one of our own" but for most of the season I have failed to understand what JP brings to the team. IMO he is totally one footed, seems to slow everything down, doesn't tackle well, doesn't win heading duels and doesn't score...can we afford such luxury? I dont think so I am afraid.

Gotta say, I'm totally mystified why Puncheon has vanished this season.
