Bad manners or todays norm ? Surely an email just out of courtesy wouldn't take up much resources.

It's bad manners AND the norm.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

Most jobs are advertised on line now. Generally you get an automated response saying if we don't get back to you then you have been unsuccessful.

Online job ads generate enormous volume, usually it's just not feasible to respond individually.

Even if you write directly you are still affected by that as whoever receives your CV will probably be wading through loads of largely irrelevant responses.

It's getting worse as good jobs get more and more scarce.

True story - I applied for the Birmingham City manager's job just after Barry Fry got the sack.

That b1tch Karen Brady didn't reply to me then either.

That's the problem nowadays.

HR loomed for a cheap way to recruit and found the internet /portal route. Nowadays, I find most gateway keepers don't understand what I do or how I operate because it does not fit the 98% norm.

Love to be able to speak to the guy / or girl who actually has the requirement but I find HR hates to be circumvented.

Why are good jobs getting more scarce?

I put an advert on indeed, experienced local plasterer wanted must have transport, had 90 odd replies, some of them couldn't spell in English, many didn't drive , had people from up north and from Ireland applying. I'm F*cked if I'd waste my time replying to them all, I'd already wasted enough time reading their CVs. Started 5 , 1s gone as he was 2 bob. The others are decent.
If you're desperate for work, you should be putting your iron in many fires that you aren't waiting for a 'thanks, but no thanks'

And it shouldn't be permitted. Very poor / bad professional behaviour.

Not when people are applying for jobs when their skills don't match what's being looked for. I've had an 'experienced plaster wanted' and 'labourer wanted' , massively different requirements for each. Had the same people applying for both. F*ck them, don't deserve a response , time wasters.

Most line managers aren't great at selecting the right CVs. The proof is in whether or not people stick and are successful after they are hired. Professional recruiters have a dramatically better success rate.

Good jobs have been scarce for quite a while due to the economy. Got a lot worse after the Brexit vote. Plenty of work in Dublin though.

Totally agree. I very rarely received any replies to job applications when I was looking for work, or even any responses from employment agencies. It could be very frustrating.

In future, it might be an idea to follow up your applications with a telephone enquiry a few days later to ask if the position is still open. If you are polite but persistent and show you have initiative, it may lead somewhere quicker than you realise.

I hope you find something soon!

I wonder how the employer would feel if a candidate said "If you offer me the job and I don't get back to you then you have been unsuccessful in employing me"
