Will England Live to Regret Snub of Zaha?

In an interesting article by Martin Green on The Hol (see news section) he discusses the possibility - in my view, likelihood - of Southgate regretting his decision to ignore Wilf. One paragraph put the wind up me: It was a real coup for the south London club. Bookmaker odds at [Link] now show Palace are all the way out at 9/2 to be relegated next season and are rated higher than Newcastle, Swansea, Burnley, Brighton, Watford and Huddersfield. We're doomed!!!

No, in the scale of things 'England' fans have to regret, Zaha is a long way down the scale. It seems like only yesterday we were bitterly criticising Erikson for only ever getting to the 1/4tr finals, and getting knocked out by really good teams. The bar is set so low now, that Southgate would have to really have to work to disappoint. Still plenty of time.

England's problem is 50 years of under achievement and the issue of Zaha is minute compared to the problems England and the FA need to resolve if England is ever going to challenge for a World Cup again.

My view is that assuming Wilf goes from strength to strength, then yes England ought to regret snubbing him, but they will actually only regret it if and when he moves to a 'big club'. In other words for so long as he plays for Palace, he's 'discounted' as being of any importance. I hope that makes sense; I know what I mean! Let's not forget that in the last year or two we have had complaints in this forum that Dann, Puncheon and even Ward should have been picked for England. If Wilf goes from strength to strength as you have said, there is a far stronger possibility that it will be he that wishes he hadn't been so hasty as he will miss out on the Euros and World Cup and will have to hope that Ivory Coast qualify for AFCON otherwise his international career will just be meaningless friendlies.

For me it's not tunnel vision, it's the painful experience of watching the abject sh*t performance of England against Iceland, with a team full of so-called stars from so-called big clubs (particularly Tottenham) clearly crying out for something different. And then, post-tournament, nothing changed; same old selections; same old sh*t. Big Sam and Gareth Southgate equally guilty in that respect. I was lucky enough to be old enough to enjoy the 1966 World Cup win and to fully appreciate the glorious 1970 World Cup. I've literally cried at England tournament exits. I've historically been a 'country before club' kinda guy (apologies to HOLs; I'm Palace through and through). But now I wouldn't cross the road to watch England if they were offering free beer and dancing girls.

You make good points, but we have to accept that Zaha is less well thought of outside of Selhurst Park than he is by us. I suspect that the reasons for that are inconsistency (he is capable of going long spells producing nothing) and perceptions of his attitude (as he can appear to the outsider as petulant and sulky). He's had an excellent season and let's hope he can build on that in the next one. He's chosen the Ivory Coast and I'd say, on balance, he did the right thing. I began (my first post) with the assumption that Wilf goes from strength to strength, so I'm really talking about 'hypothetical future Wilf' not 'current Wilf', in keeping with the title of the thread. There'll certainly be no regret at the FA at the moment, and on balance there's probably no cause for regret (a debateable point, obviously).
