southampton, maybe? what other club successfully brings kids multiple kids through their academy? isn't it all about recruitment at this point? average manager gets 12-18 months. they can't play kids.

United? Their younger players looked pretty decent the other week and look at Rashford. Made his England colleagues look even more like donkeys in the last few minutes against Iceland. Edited by chateauferret (27 Jun 2017 1.24pm)

i do like rashford and the iceland game is a good example. however, if manu has only one good player to show for all of their money spent, etc, it's not exactly a high percentage of success. it'd probably be cheaper to just buy mbappe.

Edited by chateauferret (27 Jun 2017 1.24pm) The Rashford one is a slight myth. He wasn't introduced to the team on purpose. He got a call up to the bench due to injuries then in the warm up the young reserve due to play in front of him got injured so they were forced to play Rashford. He took his chance and hasn't looked back. He wasn't pulling up trees in the youth and the likelihood is had he not had that luck he would be nowhere near the first team and probably at Wigan.

Everton, Tottenham Everton is a great example. They have purchased a number of their youngsters but still give them the opportunity to play.

Jesse Lingard? Spurs are claiming that if anyone wants to buy Harry Kane his price is £100m. That wouldn't be a bad return on their youth product

Most fans would love for us to have a conveyor belt of young exciting talent coming up from the youth set up. In reality the initial post sums it up. Unless the youngster is outstanding at youth level they will not get their chance as the risk is too great. I have watched a fair bit of the u21 games over the last few seasons and hand on heart there isn't any players that are anywhere near the first team. I am happy to be proved wrong and I hope FDB can turn this around so we can have one or two players making it through the grades to the first team - as has been the case in the past.

We not a club that can spend 30m on a single player each year. We need to produce academy products, that can be used to save that money for a position or to sell the academy product to improve squad. Although Southampton lose a lot of their players, their general outlay in transfers is like 20m at most, with all the funds recouped.
