I've noticed recently that every time Sky Sports News or Jim White, when he's on Talksh!te, want to spin some transfer rumours they now start with any of the following:

"it is my understanding that...."
"Sky Sports understands that...."
"It is our understanding...."

Does this basically allow them to peddle any poor rumours as it doesn't imply that they know anything concrete?

That's because many of them fail to even exist. They are figments from dingy corners of grubby reporters minds dreamed up to shock, excite, captivate and fill the many dull voids of every sporting day!

They think it does. Its like adding the term allegedly - it doesn't really provide legal protection, only a legal defence.
