I don't support the violence but I definitely support Spanish working class irritation with foreigners.

The British go over there, don't integrate, change the culture of the places they inhabit....I'm not talking about tourists but the people who move over there.

Yeah, they have money and they spend it....but pride in your country means not money whoring your living spaces out to people there for the weather.

It irritates me over here and I don't blame the irritation of the Spanish over there.

You are talking about immigrant Brits and I agree.

But to object to tourism is cutting your own throat when 80% of your money comes from tourism like Mallorca.

That's true.

Spain is in a lot of 'pain' right now.....I suppose what we are seeing is the dispossessed doing a 'let it burn' reaction because they aren't doing well.

Attacking tourism isn't going to help them but I'd imagine for that section of society they aren't interested in the greater good....they want to get at the interests of those who are doing ok.

Having lived there for 8yrs (2001-09) i don't agree with too much of this.
Sure some don't integrate, but as with us and the circle of friends we made, many of us chose to use Spanish cafes, Tapas bars and the local stores along with participating in the many festivals each year (along with fund-raising for local charities). While we were there, and over a beer , 3 of us decided to hire a 5-a-side pitch on a Monday night. What started as 5 or 6 ex-pats kicking a ball (badly!) for an hour once a week ended up being an 11 a-side 6 team league (3 Brit teams, 2 Spanish, 1 Argentinian).

Changing the culture? I don't remember seeing that.

Whoring our living spaces? The Spanish are just as bad (greedy) if not worse in my experience.

I honestly feel sorry for the young Spaniards but they should really be looking at their elders/Govt for answers as that's where many of the problems arose in the first place.

Barcelona used to get around 2 million visitors a year, now it's in the region of 20 million.

How this affects life for locals, property prices etc can't all be positive.

having spent much time in Spain, i can comment that a one mile strip of land from Girona at the french border ....all the way down to the Portuguese border all feels very very Giri. That is, the tourists and retired northerners have not just holidayed there....they have colonised the place.

i have met brits living on the Costa blanca for 30 years who still cannot order a cup of coffee in the local language. They steam into the place with a fat wallet and seem to regard the locals as a client class, waiters and chambermaids just there to do the bidding of the moneyed overlords. The behaviour of much of the drunken vomiting tourists is pretty abysmal. Understandable if the locals hate them.

if i was Spanish/Catalan i would be p1zzed off too....

There is an apartheid going on whereby the Spanish and the Giri's are like oil and water. They do not mix. Not socially, linguistically, or culturally. And then the Spanish are getting cross because foreign money has outpriced them from the housing market.....much the same as locals in Cornish surfing villages who have been bought out by wealthy Londoners.

if i was Spanish, i would vote for a party promising to tax the daylights out of holiday homes, especially now that Brexit is happening. I saw painted on a wall ''Gora Brexit, fils the putans ingles go home'' excuse my Basque/Valenciano spelling and grammar.

Mediterrenean Spain is the definition of 'Colonisation'

I hear what you say but it's not for me. A country's first priority is to its own.

Foreign investment is important but from what I've seen there has been a loss of perspective.

I have no doubt that the blame lies with governance much as it has done with our own approach.

to be fair I am embarrassed by most of our compatriots in Spain

Wearing their football colours, 3/4 length shorts, belly out and loutish behaviour. They seem to feel they can let themselves go once they get there and I rarely see other nationalities do the same. Some have the cheek to complain about the Germans but at least they have some decorum
