Carlton Cole was a name linked with a free transfer, but he's not one that will be coming in.

Roy Hodgson has poured cold water over suggestions that Crystal Palace are considering a move for former Chelsea and West Ham striker Carlton Cole.

The 33-year-old is a free agent after a brief spell playing in Indonesia and has been linked with a return to English football, with Palace one of the clubs linked with the former England international this week, along with Bolton Wanderers and Hull City.

But Hodgson says he knows nothing about a possible move for Cole, adding that he is not a name that has been talked about between him and sporting director Dougie Freedman.

"Has he? I don't know about that," Hodgson said when he was told that Cole had been a name linked with Palace.

"Not to me, he hasn't been mentioned.

"We have got a sporting director, Dougie Freedman, who is doing a remarkable job. He [Dougie] is working unbelievably hard to turn over every particular stone to hopefully find something under the stone.

"Now whether he has actually spoken or thought about Carlton Cole, I can't answer that. But I would doubt it, because I think he would have mentioned it to me!"

Anyone remember Malcolm Macdonald who was converted from full back to striker and scored a hatful of goals for Luton, Newcastle and England?

Can't we perform the same trick with one of our numerous defenders?

Yes I remember Malcolm being switched.
We did it the other way with Paul Hinshelwood.(Doris).
He was a rubbish striker,and we switched him to a very good fullback.
