5-3-2 formation

There's a Bobby Charlton interview on the BBC which discusses the Munich crash, and shows a Man U teamsheet from that time set up in 5-3-2 formation. I remember playing in this formation in the early seventies at school. Any thoughts on why it went out of fashion?

I think better, fitter, more technical attacking full backs in back 4's saw it off with players centrally or in the other full back side sitting in. COYP

Maybe Alaneagle1 can remember. I recall a left, right and centre back, a left and right midfield, a centre forward with an inside left and inside right and then your two wingers. Attack was the name of the game...

I definitely remember two at the back cos they were always the slow ones! Then I changed school in 1973 and it was 4-3-3 which seemed very progressive. I don't see how Man U in 1958 could have defended against 5 forwards with only two full backs. Maybe the centre half dropped back.

I definitely remember two at the back cos they were always the slow ones! Then I changed school in 1973 and it was 4-3-3 which seemed very progressive. I don't see how Man U in 1958 could have defended against 5 forwards with only two full backs. Maybe the centre half dropped back.

It was 2-3-5
Left back and right back.
Left half,Centre Half and right half.
Left wing,inside left,Centre Forward,inside right and right wing.

That's how we were rigidly set up at school, and for many years I thought those positionings were mandatory, as everyone stood in their allotted place at kickoff.
