Sainsbury's are launching their own record label!

Got me thinking about stuff I bought because it was on a particular label. Two Tone, 4AD, situation 2, factory and go discs spring to mind.

I'd quite like a box set of all the singles Trojan released.

I recall some record labels from bygone days :
Polydor, Columbia and Parlophone.
And those good old vinyls in 33,45 and 78 RPM.

Lets hope Sainsbury's use decent vinyl because much of the modern pressings are very poor.

And often not pressed from master tape recordings but cd's!

Always liked the look of this label.

On the subject of vinyl, many, many moons ago I saw a shop selling vinyls in Addiscombe called "The vinyl resting place". What a brilliant name and it brought a smile to my face.

I also recall from bygone days a shop in Norbury High Street called "Record Rendezvous" with booths where you could hear listen to singles and album tracks - all in vinyl of course !

Regal Zonophone - always liked the name. Had a few good acts on their books: Procol Harum , Marc Bolan (Tyranosarus Rex & T Rex), Joe Cocker, The Move, Roy Wood

A mate of mine is a part-owner in Blang Records [Link] , a label that specializes in "anti-folk", which is basically folk/rock music with a punk sensibility which is basically The Smiths.

Probably their most well known act (from Sarf Lahdan) is Milk Kan, who had their track "God with an iPod" [Link] featured on Soccer AM.

Milk Kan also came up with this curiosity which Dolly Parton's "people" insisted be billed as a duet with her as the first-named artist. Why she let them do it in the first place is what I still don't understand.

to be honest with you nick i take issues with this, as a vinyl collector myself its like carling releasing a rebranded gordons gin & spunking a fortune on marketing.

when im shopping anybody im with face drops when i say im just popping into a indie record shop, as im never “just” popping in as it ends up spending a considerable amount of time looking at limited edition records, listening to something youve never heard of to test it, and having a geeky music based conversation on the merits of the latest mount kimbie release with the shop owner. before you know it youve got a parking fine.

it was even worse if i went into seismic records in leamington that had a clothes shop underneath, i & my bank balance were f***ed, infact i limited myself to only 1 visit every 6 weeks to curtail overspending

what its doing is catering to the guy in the middle of a mid life crisis who has brought a vintage pair of 1210’s on ebay without realising kams are better & dont even buy new stylus.

still, im pleased theyve got arlo guthrie on their records, may go and listen the the restaurant massacree!

Anyone going to own up to at a tender age ever buying one of those LP's from Woolies with covers of the month's hits?

Was it the Hallmark label?
