I can't get my head round the fact you can be sent off from a game that hasn't even happened yet ?

There were changes last year which included the fact that a player can be sent off before kick-off eg Fighting in the tunnel etc etc.But that player can be replaced if he/she was in the starting line-up so that the team starts with 11 players.
