That's not what I asked for!

I want to see the actual policy and not some hack from the Express's interpretation of one incident, spun to wind up it's gullible readership.

The Express, or the Mail, on such matters, are about as reliable as a chocolate teapot.

When I have time, I will try to find it myself, but I expect it to be very different and nuanced than you are being led to believe.

Is there an approved list of sources whose teapots are made of more reliable material?

Imagine a BBC ad that said This position is only open to white Caucasian candidates Black, Asian or BAME people should not apply

I am not defending it, and I am only guessing, but I suspect this would be a result of "affirmative action" in which when set targets for one group have been reached they are closed to them, which in turn means it's only open to others.

It's not racism. It just looks like it.

This post proves that you would spin anything to be 'right'.
Discrimination for jobs based on race is a proper definition of racism.
It doesn't even pretend to be anything else.

The BBC are massive hypocrites, and so are you.

This is, as I suspected, a recipe for affirmative action, which is something an organisation like the BBC is always likely to adopt. They feel compelled to ensure that their staffing broadly matches the diversity to be found in modern Britain. Which is who they serve and not one section of it.

Whilst I can understand their position, I want to make it quite clear that my own view is that every appointment needs to be solely on merit. So long as merit is the primary consideration, and affirmative action kept secondary, then it can be OK, but it can be disastrously misunderstood, as is the case in this thread.

So I am not in favour. Addressing inequalities, prejudice and a lack of opportunities needs to dealt with through education and training. Affirmative action might be done for the best of intentions, but can make things worse by hardening attitudes, rather than softening them. Things like women only short lists are a no, no for me, for the same reasons.

You very obviously have no idea of why affirmative action is undertaken. It has nothing whatsoever to do with racism. It only has to do with seeking to ensure a workforce representative of your client base.

Maybe the difference is too subtle for you, but it's the motivation behind the action which is the determinant.

I agree with you. The 20% “target” figure seems quite arbitrary when the BAME population of the country is around 3%.

You’re right. The BBC is just a sidebar to the horror that is going on.
