Driving up to the game we all like to discuss team selection etc...
The overwhelming thoughts, were that height was not too important at the back tonight (no Giroud) ...But with players such as Arsenal’s front three (raw pace) we need quick agile defenders.
The decision to play Kelly (primarily for his height..back post defending etc..) was wrong. Sanchez made him look pedestrian, which meant Tomkins had to again and again cover Kelly...
Just seems a decision made out of loyalty rather than picking a team for each respective team we play ....appreciate we haven’t the numbers to be too clever, but TFM was the obvious choice to inject some pace into the back four

Clearly Roy doesn't agree.

I think TFM will be in for Kelly now.

The main error was not pressing enough, and in the case of Benteke, at all, apart from a late show of it when it was obviously started too late to actually get there and actually close down, block or tackle.

Why point the finger at Kelly , the first goal came from a weak defensive header from Schulpp ,the second a poor clearance from Benteckers and the third because Tompkins the only player not marking anyone should have dropped ten yards as soon as Whiltshire found space in the middle of the park . The great ball he delivered could have been dealt with had we not been so flat .
Sanchez would make most defenders look pedestrian Kelly included but the goals last night were not Kellys fault but others individual errors .

And we still need a striker

Fosu-Mensah was only just back from injury so presumably there was a judgement about his fitness - last thing we would have wanted was a relapse and another long outage.

Ward is listed on physioroom as back on 8 January.

I suppose some might argue that he should have been aware of Mustafi at the far post who of course scored the opening goal.Maybe this is a tad harsh, I will need to look at the TV coverage.

I'm sure he was aware of Mustafi but was also covering the space in front of him which was the danger zone , the ball in fairness could not have fallen better to the Arsenal player . It was a poor goal to concede all round from poor clearance ,the failure to stop the shot , a weak save from Jules and then Kelly being caught between covering the middle and the back stick .

I need to look at the TV coverage to see if Speroni could have done better.

I suppose one could argue that he did push it away from the goal but unfortunately the ball fell to Mustafi who was unmarked.

the tactics v Arsenal weren't about selection - we had two different formations each half, once Zaha went back to the right wing and Cheek came off the left back to an advanced central position we were more effective. Schlupp was a different player second half - he is a real athlete and if his ability to burst through the lines and turn defence into attack could be used more regularly he could be handy for us, cos lately he's looked so poor. Wouldn't put the loss down to individual errors either - we were basically outclassed but gave it a good go. Be interesting if Roy v City tries to do what Benitez tried the other night (a formation of 10-0-0) or is more adventurous like we were second half.

Thought we stood off too much 1st half. Clearly forward pair were asked to not close down in their half and just drop into shape. We were far more effective when we got in their faces and switched Wilf wider, especially when Sako came on.
Obviously people want Benteke to disobey his manager and chase down defenders in their own half. When chasing the game we had to be more proactive and that's when we closed higher up, but the team were following their managers instructions, clearly.

Our tactics were not why we lost.

We had just one problem - Jack Wilshere was
playing for them.

Now he has calmed down and has stopped his self-injury causing tackles he will become the best English born midfield general since Glen Hoddle.

Swap Benteke for him?
