Whatever happened to the magic of the cup?

I must say I'm disappointed that clubs don't take the FA Cup more seriously.

Am I alone in this?

Yes, resting players gives Palace a better chance of survival in The Premiership.

And we all know how important the money is.

Hang on. Are we fans or financial consultants?

The FA Cup is our one hope of real glory. We've nearly won it twice.

Nobody else seems to care.

Is it just me? Am I howling at the moon?

You can blame Man Utd for the demise of the FA Cup when they didn't enter because they went and played in a meaningless Int'l club competition.

For PL teams the magic of the cup starts at the quarter or even semi finals. Before that it has become an inconvenience, which is a shame.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

Last time we made the Cup final we lost because of the ref. It would have meant everything to us and United sacked the manager after winning it. Bloody disgrace!

League is more important now because of the money so big teams don't give a s***.

I think that's just a small cause tbf.

Sky money and hundreds of games on tv, managers resting and protecting players from injury and 6 or however many of your own games on tv takes away the magic of cup final day. It's for the top 6, the safe mid-table teams and championship and league 1 teams with momentum.

I'm guilty of eventually following the herd and not caring too much.

PL riches dwarfs the glory of the FA Cup. They're going to have to raise the incentives somehow for teams trying to stay in or get into the PL. It is largely British people that remember the glory of the old FA Cup dramas - not today's international audiences of the PL. The FA Cup needs to be upgraded commercially to bring in the money to make it worth the risk. It probably cannot be done.

Many years ago the FA Cup was (and still is to most lower league clubs) a potential major source of revenue as well as club glory. Winning 'The Cup' was then on a par with winning the league.

This has changed now mainly due to Sky and the amount of money now concentrated in the EPL.

Today, given the importance to PL clubs of remaining in the league, it is only a handful of wealthy clubs who who have a large squad of quality players who can afford to take the cup really seriously. They can rotate their squad and have cover for most potential injuries.
Smaller (poorer) clubs - like Palace just do not have the means of really competing in the FA /League cups while also ensuring they protect their league status.

The FA cup is still very attractive to most club supporters, and I suspect many players ,but not so much now to club owners whos main concern now is the TV money available in the PL.

I'm sure the club cares a hell of a lot about the money but my personal reasons are more selfish, living in France these days, the lower down the leagues Palace go the less chance I get to see them play.

Simple solution. Cut the crap and give the FA Cup winners an automatic place in the (so called) Champions League.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

Let's not pretend as if the soul has been completely ripped out of the club and the fans and that it would be this way under any circumstance.

Manchester City fielded one of their strongest line-ups in the 3rd round because winning cups is important. However, it is not as important as the league. Man City are 15 points clear of 2nd place, they will now be fielding their strongest team in the FA Cup and Europe, with the backup string in the intervening Prem fixtures. Does this mean the league has lost all meaning to them? Of course not.

Palace aren't just in a relegation battle, they were dead and buried by October. They broke so many records of being the statistically worst team ever and through so much mental and physical strength managed to pull themselves out of it with a fighting chance of staying up.

In any of our 8 game unbeaten run, all it would have taken is one goal from any of the opposition and we'd probably be rock bottom now. Imagine losing to Brighton at the Amex, or not equalising against West Ham. Do you know how much concentration that must take to be that switched on in pressure situations, not just for 1 or 2 games but every game we've had since Hodgson took over, just to try and get ourselves out of a terrible mess.

This season, screw the cup. The players have to keep going at these ridiculously high levels just to keep us up. And they are ridiculously high levels because we're in European places by Form, so we're still suffering the effects of the start of the season because we should be many points clear of relegation.

Now, if we had started with Roy, had the players we needed rather than start with 1 striker and been sitting comfortably 6 points clear of the relegation zone, I'd say start the best team at Brighton. It's Brighton away, our biggest rivals.

But I think we can let the Club have the night off in this circumstance. Hopefully next year we'll draw them again and be in a position to start the best 11.

You are not, I felt horrible last night and I can not understand giving up before the start and not having a go. Of course I see the risk of injury but genuinely I wonder if all this talk and resting has not an opposite effect and causes harm over all.
So lets stop cups and all become accountants and count our tv money so we can be one of the little friends of the big bullies in the playground of the PL. f*** modern football.
