EPL keep top 6 apart in 1st & last league games co

I’m not sure how I feel about it. They used to wish for a another ‘89 Liverpool 0-2 Arsenal in the last game but as they now see it damaging the interest in the relegation battle if 2 top teams playing each other have nothing to aim for on the last day then I can see why they’re kept apart.

Sorry to be a pedant, but the Liverpool-Arsenal decider in 1989 wasn’t scheduled to be the last game of the season. It was scheduled for weekend after the Cup semi finals, but postponed in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster. Because of Liverpool’s resulting fixture congestion it wasn’t played until almost 2 weeks after the planned end of season (and 6 days after the Cup Final). I'm sure there have been big time match ups as the last game, but league football wasn’t televised live at all until 1985-86. And two years ago, if Chelsea hadn’t been so bad the Chelsea-Leicester season finale could have been juicy.

I take the opposite view. I think the end of the season should be full of top 6 v top 6 fixtures, then you won’t get travesties like Brighton v Man Utd (etc etc). This story is yet more evidence - as if it were needed - that certain clubs get favourable treatment whereas the rest get what they are given.

I don't think anyone is surprised. Somebody posted a good article a while back about how the fixtures were arranged and it confirmed that clubs do have some say in them. This maybe a step too far.

I remember hearing about something similar to this on the radio about three years ago in relation to the end of the season but it was just a 'throw away line' in a general conversation. Rather than top six were kept apart it was the big teams were kept apart because they knew viewing figures would be less as the likely hood is it would mean less then. What attracted more than usual are matches involving clubs in the relegation fight. I don't know if it stands but perhaps rival clubs' matches like us v Brighton maybe not to be played at the end.

I don’t think there were any title deciders in division 1 before that Anfield decider and they did try to get a repeat for a while after but they had different teams winning the league. Liverpool, Arsenal, Leeds, Man U, Blackburn.

Stands to reason doesn't it? Top 6 clubs would invariably be in the finals of cups Plus I suspect Sky like to have their super sundays

Can someone tell me what the odds are now of us mere Herbert's playing a top six team then for the first game of the season? My feeble mind suggests that you have a 38% chance of doing so?
