In France. No real risk of mass slaughter in the absence of colonial wars in N Africa or Indo-China but good for teaching a generation of effete, cosseted Facebook-obssessed ponces about social responsibility. We should do the same here.

We should do the same here. Broadly in favour but with caveats. It has to include everybody, no exemptions for religious grounds / beliefs or university graduates. So it will have to be a program that the various faith groups can sign up to. I would not expect people to go and fight that should be left to our military. It will need a clear purpose, what are you trying to achieve? Discipline, fitness, education, social responsibility? It must also include rewards to incentivise. In Switzerland National Service is popular because it is fun and people make friends. It was embedded in to Swiss culture so if you want a career it is expected that you perform well in your National Service. Do well in you NS and your employer looks favourably upon it in your chosen career. So lots of detail to work out but it could work and once the first lot have gone through it if they enjoyed it and felt it made a difference they will spread the good word. My dad did his NS in the early fifties they taught him to drive and to become an electrician so apart from being shot at in Egypt he enjoyed it.

I learned far more about real life in the Scouts than I did at school. Teamwork, leadership, conflict resolution, planning and budgeting, presenting and public speaking, resolve, plus a raft of practical skills. Also mixing and getting along with kids from completely different backgrounds.
