His contract with Olympique Lyon runs up next summer and they're trying to cash in. He was a starter at Lyon last year. Really fast, combative player. Besiktas is said to be very close to signing him. President Aulas has dropped his demands from 5M to 2M.

I know that by now Ward has extended his contract and Wan Bissaka is a good young right back too. But who would you not have rather had Rafael on a similar salary to Ward's??

Rafael was on 3 million a year at Lyon. I imagine Ward's new dea, is around 50000 a week, therefore more than 2,5 a year.

Shock horror, I'd rather have Ward. For a start, I know his face fits at Palace. Secondly, I'm making the bold assumption that neither Man U (who got rid) nor Lyon (who want to get rid) did/are doing so because he's getting better. And finally, and with no disrespect to the vertically challenged, he's Jonny Williams' sized and, whilst that's fine in attacking midfield and up front, I prefer defenders who have a bit more stature.

I remember him being crap at Man U. He also got away with some amazing fouls; he wouldn't get away with those here. In all fairness, I haven't followed his career since. Can't imagine us being interested.

Well, he plays as a fullback so he won't have double digits numbers, but his stats are pretty good. He also has great runs up the flank.

He's a fullback though, best ones are short in height.

Think he falls into the category of `he must be good because he played for Man Utd` in peoples minds. This is not necessarily the case. Think Man U and Fergie made average players look a lot better because of the shirt they wore. John O'Shea, Wes Brown, the list goes on.

I'm trying not to make that mistake. He looked great to me. Look what the French said about him:
[Link]
"RAFAEL ENCHAÎNE LES BONNES PERFORMANCES" is in the article for those who speak French.

He almost made team of the season in Ligue these past few years, but was behind Dani Alves and Sidibe. Can you get Dani Alves and Sidibe to Palace? No.
He's the next best thing after them.

Was a real option for the Brazil national team at the World Cup, but the manager opted for Fagner. Fagner is soon to be 30 years old and a much more defensive option.

What Palace needs on the right is a player to go up and down the flank, an offensive player, especially if some left footer like Townsend plays inverted winger there and enters the central area onto his good foot leaving the right for the fullback to come into and cross very fast.

Like Thuram and Maldini?

If you come to a fork in the road, take it.

Well, you can always find exceptions, but in the prezent, players like Marcelo, Jordi Alba, Carvajal, Kimmich, Danny Rose, Clyne (at least before the injury) are the best fullbacks in the world.

And about Thuram and Maldini...I was around when they were playing, their best positions were as center backs. Thuram played as a right back in the '98 tournament, it's true, but all his career after that he played as a center half.
