from media duties in a row over bonuses! Could be some interesting improvisation when they show the team selection on TV in the first weekend as they've refused to do the green screen walk ups. I wonder if Rondon binned off his new signing interview to show solidarity to his new team mates?

I like Newcaste a lot. Nice city, great stadium right in the centre. Nice people. It's a shame that fat b*stard Ashely is still there. Feel slightly sorry for Newcastle fans. Newcastle is one of the few cities where you will generally only see shirts of the local team and where everyone local supports the side. That said if it means they have a terrible start to the season and we can put a bit of gap between them and us, it's one more side with work to do later in the season to catch us.

Past glories count for little if the club is perennially underperforming. Newcastle haven't won jack in the lifetime of many of their supporters and whilst it's true that they continue to attract support, that could just be cynically interpreted as some kind of mass delusion. I'd say that they used to be a big club.

I'd say that they used to be a big club. In today’s game the only variable that confirms if you’re a big club is revenue. Otherwise you’re battling for the same positions and the same players because money decides the outcomes over time. The trick is to grow your income, and actually have the room for growth. I’m going to contradict myself and say I think there’s big clubs failing below us and into the leagues below but it means very little if even back in the Prem their revenue is no bigger than ours. The day Martin Jol left Ajax for Fulham really highlighted for me what money has done to football.

Fair enough if that’s the case. If the club are trying it on then that’s their problem and it doesn’t look good to potential signings, if there are any.

I would be interested to know the details of the bonus offer and what the players want. I know we all think greedy players but maybe just maybe it's a false benefit. We used to have them where I work many years ago. Stuff was offered you didn't want or need but the company made a big deal about it. In the case of Newcastle, and of course I don't know, but bonuses have to be linked to realistic goals. It's no good telling the goalkeeper he can have a £1mm bonus as long as he scores 20 goals this season. With Newcastle failing to invest in players are the targets Ashley is setting the team realistic? I think they will struggle this season so I would pay them for every place above the relegation zone. Has Ashley based their bonus pool on winning a major competition or qualifying for Europe?

Last summer the owner stepped in to negotiate directly with Jamaal Lascelles, Newcastle’s captain, after it seemed an impasse with Charnley and the rest of the board could not be broken. They finally agreed the squad would divide £4m between them were the squad to retain Premier League status, plus an extra £1m for every position they finished above the relegation zone. As Benítez’s side ended up in 10th place they made a collective sum of around £11m. So my guess would be they want this again at an increased return.
