Back from the game - really didn't think we were too bad, just far too profligate in front of goal.
However, I'm really beginning to think that with Meyer & Kouyate signed (and Loftus-Cheek no longer around), we should switch back to a 4-3-3.
Having Loftus-Cheek out on the left last season meant that we had a really potent attacking threat which Schlupp, as hard as he does work, just can't provide. We looked far more dangerous when we did eventually switch to a 4-3-3 for the last 20 mins, with Zaha & Townsend off Benteke, and Meyer, Luka & Macca in the middle - maybe we should start like this next week against the Saints?

I agree and many of the fans I know also would support this.
Don’t think it will happen as Roy likes a narrow 4 in midfield to avoid being outnumbered there and when attacking he tends to use the full backs to provide width.
I think 4-3-3 could help Benteke( or whoever was the central striker) but it would mean Wilf would have to track back more.

I guess it all comes down to who the opposition is and how they are setting up. We did look more effective in the last 20 mins with a 4 3 3
but they were defending a lead at that point so their mind set had changed. It is not that simple as phases of the game changes the requirements of the play. I do think a front three will suite Benteke and whilst it is easy to criticise him in fairness he is not getting the service. I think our squad this season is going to enable us to change our formations and styles in a more effective way than last season so I am hopeful of a more effective season. cOYP

Why oh why is Hennesey still between the sticks. He spends most of his time when threatened fluffing around and very rarely makes solid decisions. A howler for the second goal and generally the defence is back to early 17/18 season. Oh how we missed Wan Bisaka,m he is a shining light for the Eagles who will, I am afraid continue to have their wings clipped. Up Front, Benteke is still a waste of good cash. I don't rate him at all for the price. Ih while i'm at it. Wickham ? I'm guessing he'll have an arm problem next. He's hurt everything else and not played for 2 seasons. Is he still being paid?

I agree, you have to use the players you have in the formation which suits them. At the moment it feels like square pegs in round holes. Get wilf back on the wing and Meyer in midfield with luka and macc.

The problem is that 4-3-3 puts a lot of responsibility on the central striker, and Benteke and Sorloth don't look capable of shouldering that responsibility.

I think Meyer will simply take Schlupp's place on the left side of a narrow 4.

Yeah I agree this is more likely - I guess Roy only really wants us to go 4-3-3 if we're behind in games

Don't think for a moment he would deploy it but there is the possibility of going 3-5-2 with Kelly,Sakho and Tomkins as the back three, AWB and PVA as wing backs,Milivojevic,McArthur and Meyer in midfield and a combination of Zaha/Townsend/Ayew as the front pairing.
No Benteke !

Hennesey's been mustard for about 10 games now.

almost all our best performances last season came with Wilf and Andros up front but we seem to have forgotten this. we have enough midfield options to revert to this.

Our problem still rests with our inability to keep regular clean sheets. We remain weak down our right side without WBS and Tompkins. We need to reinforce the defence as we seem to lose defenders to injury to regularly. Ward and Kelly playing together weaken our defence as they are not good enough to start. So changing the system may not be sufficient if we defend as poorly as we did for their two goals Sunday.
