Trade unions calling for it. Personally. I would be in favour.

A fair number of people work from home now for a portion of the week and it seems reasonable that the progression should be toward more leisure/home time for the vast majority.
There are a number of factors to consider but life is not about work. We are still in the aftermath of Victorian working practices which serve no one except employers.

There are big advantages in terms of congestion and the family unit plus people have more time to spend money which is good for the economy and extra time to better themselves.

Any takers?

As Hrolf indicated, the resistance comes from employers. Remote working is the future.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

I haven't read the article yet but are the Trade Unions suggesting a 20% drop in pay to go with the 20& reduction in hours or are they suggesting that the working hours in the four days be longer?

That's what I wondered.

Can't see many self-employed people taking it up.

As I said on another thread I am in favour of flexible working hours and working from home, no problem. But I believe the unions are arguing for same pay for less work.

I would have though they would serve their members better by commissioning studies into the potential impact of automation and AI on their members.

We will shortly (years) see a seismic shift in working in this country on a bigger and broader scale than the 1980's when we lost heavy industry. I don't have the answer but I can see the problem, mass unemployment. It has already started in the high street and anyone who works in an office should be concerned. If I were the TUC I would be pushing the government for solutions. At the moment everyone is concerned with Brexit well this will happen with or without Brexit. The only MP I have heard discuss this is Chuka Umunna I think it shameful that we are sleep walking into a major loss of jobs.

Will probably just end up being the public sector, if it happened.

It would be likely to begin there but remember that people only started having two days off because of the determined efforts of individuals.
If employers had their way, we would all be working 24 hours every day for peanuts.
