years too late, according to contractual arrangements.
successive Governments saw this as another 'little earner', and kept scchhtumm.

So where's the refunds for those that over-paid ?

The Dartford Tunnel should also be free. They must have paid for that bridge 100 times over.
I suppose we should be grateful that we have so few tolls, unlike France.

what hacks me off (memory from a lecture in 1988 ), is that there is shed loads of money taken in road tax, but only around <10% of that is spent on road maintenance and building.
Why should people with vehicles keep double-funding stuff, when they already over-pay in tax ?

That's much higher than the percentage of death duties spent on building crematoriums

What we know as Road Tax was originally called the Road Fund Licence, the clue to its purpose being in the name itself, the name being changed over the years to disguise (and justify) the diversion of this money away from its intended application. Rather like the Ponzi scheme better known as 'National Insurance', in fact.

Death Duties (or Capital Transfer Tax or Inheritance Tax, depending on how long your memory is) was never intended to fund the construction of crematoria or to otherwise assist in the disposal of corpses.

Perhaps you were just being flippant, though.

The thieves now label it a vehicle tax.

It should be as per it's original use and it should all be spent on the roads and I don't include "street furniture", speed cameras and speed humps etc in that.

Dartford crossing was going to be free once it was paid off but instead the government sold it to a Franch company it which some of there mates have shares in . so warning to the severn bridge it may soon belong to a German company

I wonder what this will do to the traffic at Brynglas tunnel and around Bristol during rush hour.

I am guessing commuting between Wales and Bristol will increase. Bristol housing costs are mad.

I'd guess it wouldn't make much difference. People commuting to Cardiff/Newport from Bristol had no alternative other than to pay the toll. I can't see that making the East to West crossing free will impact on traffic volume.
