Gatwick airport is closed due to drones flying over the airport.

[Link]

I feel really sorry for the poor passengers. Getting away at Christmas is a nightmare and it doesn't seem to matter if it is by train, car or plane you will have problems.

I don't blame the airport authorities I just heard a spokesmen explain they closed the airport last night the drones disappeared and every time they tried to re-start flights the drones come back. Apparently they have been sighted as I type this.

This smacks to me of some form of protest rather than some bored teenager. Whoever it is I hope they are caught and jailed.

Surely they can shoot them or something.
I thought they trained hawks to take them down.

there are many solutions available to the military but apparently not to private business (because someone might get hurt if they fall from the sky) to tackle unwanted drones.
A lot of drones are programmed not to be able to enter airpsace that is prohibited but that would not stop someone with computer skill to alter the code.
Sadly I think we might end up with having a licence system and heavy penalities/jail terms.
the problem is afffecting our prisons as well and its already known that ISIS have used them to deliver grenade payloads for terrorism.
These things are very sofisticated and I have watched them in use first hand and have been amazed at their speed and accuracy. SO what happens now with Amazon project ?
PS some friends of mine have been delayed at Gatwick because of these ars*hole drone pilots.

I heard a drone pilot explain that they can have a pr-programmed flight plan. So you can start the thing up and just walk away, not sure then how the police can find you.

Without the technology to shut down unauthorized devices effectively, I agree with Harborough Eagle that we are going to require licences etc to own one.

I just hope that we can catch those responseible and put them behind bars for a long time.... It's akin to a terrorist plot.

We need somekind of Bulletless Ray-gun that somehow affects the radio signal/Electrics of these things to stop them flying!

what I dont understand is why, once spotted, someone can't just follow them!!

Are Sussex Police certain they saw a drone, or have they just found new ways to kettle people?

I was wondering if it's something to do with the people always protesting about it's possible expansion?

I feel sorry for all the people affected by it but it does annoy me the way people/the media try to play poor me one-upmanship.

"I'm taking my kid to lapland", "It's my honeymoon", "I'm going to see a sick relative", "It's really unpleasant.... and i'm disabled" etc.

Mind you, not as much as the people who say things like "why haven't they got prevention in place for these things?"

Coming to a Brighton vs Palace game soon. Sorry Palace fans a drone has been spotted you have to stay at the station until after the kick off.

I was thinking the same thing but no one's claimed responsibility and these idiot protestors do love publicity.

plenty of that on BBC this Morning! - angry passengers venting their spleens and throwing hissy fits that they can't get to their Ski resort in time for xmas drinkies!

Even so, I do feel sorry for them as if I were mixed up in it all, I'd be feeling pretty fecked off. It's one of the times that I feel for the Airlines too - it's not their fault that they have to cancel their flights because of these idiot droners. I just hope they are insured for situations like this, and they can pass their payout onto the disrupted passengers.

You'd be brave and/or stupid to. It's up to 5 years in jail and an unlimited fine, I believe.

The flying of these drones next to the airport has been a deliberate act to cause maximum disruption affecting thousands of passengers, not forgetting the severe problems it has caused for Gatwick staff and the airlines.

Let us hope the perpetrators are brought to justice and pay a gargantuan price for their reprehensible behaviour.
