Follow the link below, the coldest day of the year is the 7th of February, and Spring really starts just after today. So Paddy's day is the herald to the end of the winter misery. Sorry. Just don’t get it when the non Irish segments of the UK go mad for Paddy’s Day. Similarly with Burns’ Night. I can just see the Scots go for an all out pee up to celebrate St George’s Day.

On days like this I am glad I no longer work in Central London. A place where every plastic paddy feels that to be Irish you have to where a green Guinness Sponsored piece of head wear and drink large quantities of a beer they would not touch for 364 days of the year and when it all pops up again and your puke is a funny colour believe you might be dying. I am not anti Irish or anti Guinness (but would never drink it myself) just anti the sheer lunacy that comes with this day.

The old Christian calendar had a different Saint for nearly every day of the year. These days you need not be irish or religious. And with no visits to Selhurst, what else do you have to distract yourself ? St Andrew, St David & St George's day... any ideas why they do not seem to cast a very long shadow ?

I think this is answered in the thread - Guinness. It has in mainstream pubs got the stout market sown up, has a huge marketing budget and on this day sells huge amounts of the black stuff. They also have a ready made market in people looking to claim Irish roots. Its similar to any say in say an Edinburgh summer with Americans 'coming home,' to a place they have never been to in their lives. Not sure there is a big enough drinks manufacturer to have the clout to create something around say St Georges day, but some try.
