SJ hit the nail on the head a few days ago. Politicians need to start earning their money. For too many years they've been employing family staff, filing generous expenses claims, and only visiting 'the house' when they need some attendance cash.

We have an un-holy Administration (not Government), where the Tories are dictated to by the DUP, and the EU.
We have no viable opposition party to oust the ruling parties.
And the fact Farage can make a mockery of the UK political system says more about the passive electorate, than it does about him.

Isn't that what SJ did when he was chairman of Palace?

Yes. He made his brother Dominic his deputy. And I have been told that the No 2 was widely disliked by all the staff who worked under him. But that is only hearsay although I can well believe it looking at all the other aspects of SJ's regime, culminating in administration in 2010.

So busy making a mockery of the UK he didn’t have time to turn up for his proper job. And when he did he misspent his employers funds and had to pay them back over 10 months. Such a great example to politics.

There is no prospect of any meaningful reform of politics. Give it a while and the Brexit party will be just as bad as the rest #My_turn_at_the_trough.

Some people favour proportionately representation and those same people complain about the Tory DUP alliance well that is what you get with PR. Imagine what politics you would get with the following governments:

Labour / Lib Dems / SNP / Greens

Tories / DUP / Brexit

Sure all voters would be represented and nothing meaningful would be done just look at Italy.

For me the system is not perfect but is workable. The real problem is the lack of first class minds and real life experience. Too many professional politicians whose career path is:

Private education / University / Party job / MP / Cabinet.

Politicians are humans and as such as subject to all the same failings and vices....don't we know it.

The two best methods to improve standards in any human endeavour is competition and regulation.....with competition being head and shoulders the better of the two.

Unfortunately competition in the political field starts strong but lessens considerably the higher they get.

By the time they get to parliament the opportunities for an easy life with gravy is all too apparent.

Agreed. There's been a lot of criticism of the first past the post system we have. However, I can't see how individual MP's could be held directly accountable without it.

I'm not a fan of the EU proportional representation system where there is a lack of control over what who a seat gets given too. For example Farage first got elected as an MEP with only 9.7% of the vote.

If we go for any change each constituency should use AV to stop the vote of smaller parties getting split.

Also, I simply don't think they get paid enough to attract talented candidates willing to give up their jobs to become responsible for 100,000 people with the risk of getting sacked at the next election. That's why you either end up with totally unemployable people like Corbyn* and Abbott or rich kids playing politics like Cameron and Boris.

(Corbyn was brought up in a manor house so also a rich kid)

A new party with no policies does significantly better in the polls than two established parties with no idea ... that says it all.

Maybe we should only allow people to become politicians after they have done some proper jobs to show they can work with others towards targets and goals like the rest of us, too many of them get jobs from their parents and parents friends for a year or two before being parachuted into safe seats for a life of riley and privilege at our expense.
How can anyone know what the majority of the voters go through every day if they haven't experienced it themselves.
