But perhaps also its strength and what actually makes it a democracy?

Yes and all would be fine except the knobends get more support than the law abiding normal citizens.

Looks like he's thrown in the towel. Can't say I blame him.

'UN actively passing names of Uighur dissidents to Chinese regime:' whistleblower [Link]

"Human rights lawyer interviewed on British radio station said 'her boss' was the one passing on names to CCP. A human rights lawyer working for the United Nations in Geneva has accused the body's Human Rights Council of actively passing names of Uighur dissidents to the Chinese Communist Party.

Speaking to Maajid Nawaz on LBC radio, Emma Reilly said that prior to each UNHRC session, the Chinese government would ask the UN "Whether or not certain people were planning to come." She added, "It is completely against the rules to hand over that information to any government.

Nawaz was visibly struggling to absorb the enormity of what his interviewee revealed. "The United Nations is handing over the names of genocided Uighur dissidents... to the government of China that is genociding them?" he asked incredulously."

China rather than Hong Kong related news, but still deplorable behaviour by the UN..

Emma Reilly has been making such claims since 2013.

This is not news as in a new story.

What she alleges is the the OHCHR gives the names of diaspora dissidents from China plan to attend meetings of the OHCHR in Geneva.

I have no idea if the allegations have been proved or disproved but continually denied by OHCHR.

The UN gravy train is something as a beneficiary you never wanna get off, the levels of pay and benefits are eye watering and senior appointments made from a pool of friends and family. Needs a complete overhaul

Here's the reply from the UN Ethics office which appears to state that there may be merits to the claim but good relations with China is more important

Hong Kong emigration to Britain could mean $36 billion capital outflow - [Link]

Quote HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong residents leaving the city to move to Britain could trigger capital outflows of HK$280 billion ($36 billion) this year from the Asian financial centre, a new report published by Bank of America (BofA) said.

Beijing’s move to impose a national security law in June last year prompted Britain to offer refuge to almost 3 million Hong Kong residents eligible for the British National Overseas (BNO) passport from January 31.

From then, these residents will be eligible to stay in Britain for five years, at which point they can apply for settlement if requirements are met and ultimately citizenship.

A British Home Office study, published last year, estimated 153,300 people could arrive in Britain from Hong Kong in 2021 as the immigration changes came into effect.

BofA estimated if those leaving sold a Hong Kong apartment for HK$7.53 million ($971,224.41) – the average price in the city’s Kowloon district – and withdrew their pension savings then the capital outflow in 2021 could reach HK$280.2 billion.

Emigration could be as high as 321,600 residents in the next five years starting in January last year, the British Home Office study estimated.

The number of emigrants is expected to fall over the next four years, the Home Office study said. As a result, BofA forecast that the impact on the Hong Kong dollar from the departing population would be reduced.

In total, over five years, BofA said the capital outflow from Hong Kong could reach HK$588 billion ($75.8 billion).

“Capital outflows tied to emigration could help push USDHKD away from 7.75, the bottom end of the band,” BofA strategist Chun Him Cheung said in the research note.

He said the capital outflow should not hurt Hong Kong’s short term interest rates as liquidity remains strong as a result of the low lending rates around the world.

Let's all be mates with our Chinese brothers. If not you can be re-educated until you are. It's not like there are any human rights issues there are there? I would not believe it from our trustworthy Chinese friends. I presumed this thread was re opened as they are currently ramping up the pressure on the Hong Kong citizens. Their British protection is rescinded. Their passports are not to be recognised anymore.

I used to put the manager's name in front of Red and Blue but got fed up with changing it. If someone cool becomes our manager then maybe..

Yes another situation that's escalated quickly, albeit predictably. Best to get out ASAP where possible and able, for those wanting to. Thousands have already left of late.
