Is 70 today. Seem to remember we signed him when Everton got Joe Harper who we’d been chasing.

Whittle signed for us in I believe the 1972-73 season.
If I am not mistaken, his first goal for us was in that 5-0 rout against Man Utd.
He is the uncle of Everton's Tom Davies.

Later in his career he spent a season playing in Iran.

Real good old day's, when pitches were pitches, where the ball would just suddenly stop and all the players chasing it would fall over themselves and where we stood at Selhurst bashing the wooden sign boards along to Glad all over, Southampton brings me back down to earth ..Oh how I hate that club

I think the Man U game was his debut, then there was the 'Golden Goal' at Sunderland, strange he had a championship medal but was slumming it with us in the old Third Div. Great servant - happy bday and many happy ones.

Goal number 4 of the game I think - a deft chip from just inside the box.

I was there. In the Homesdale. Then the United lot started lobbing bricks down on us from up the back. Was like a war zone. But we thrashed them.

I used to like the way the little fella used to jump in front of free kicks. Highly entertaining if largely pointless.
