Ive had a couple of beers in the past with Alan Minter, but then I think everyone has

I am mates (if anyone here remembers him) with Michael Alldis who was once British and Comminwealth champ and fought for a tinpot version of the world title.

He owns a scaffolding company these days and a few years ago got hit by some huge fine or tax bill so came out of retirement at 44 or so

I remember Alan Minter well, But not the other guy. I once enjoyed free champers all night at a newly opened wine bar in berkeley square courtesy of one chris eubank.

From the sublime to the ridiculous.

I was lucky enough to stand and have a drink with John Conteh.. funnily enough at selhurst park some years back where he was an after dinner speaker... Straight up what a lovely lovely man he was to talk to and have a beer with.

Before my time and I never saw him fight but my old man said he was a very good fighter who probably under acheived a bit...

Any of our older members see him fight and how good was he??

Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!!

He was very good but his lifestyle got in the way. He got into the celebrity thing and booze, and other things, affected him later in his career. He was a stylish fighter who could take a punch and bang a bit himself.

I havent followed boxing for years & years - the last time I took any real interest was in the period of :
Roberto Duran / Marvellous Marvin Haggler / Sugar Ray Leanard they just seemed to be light years ahead of everyone else in their weight at the time.

( Maybe the years have played tricks on me but thats how I remember it)

I agree with that. Add in Tommy Hearns as well. John Mugabe was a dangerous opponent . Vito Antoufermo, Wilfred Scypion and Ayub Kalule were also around and not forgetting Tony Sibson who was a good fighter.

Plus the best of the supporting cast, Wilfred Benitez

I have been in the company of Alan Minter's son, Ross, who was also a professional boxer going by the name "Ross the boss".

In terms of boxers from bygone days, I know some gentleman who goes by the name of "Gus" (Not his real name) as his dear father was a fan of Gus Lesnevich.
My father spoke very highly of Joe Louis.

Yes, he was very good. Mustafa Hamsho was also around then.
