I read that Chelsea were offering him a new deal so he couldn’t leave on a free next year and were then looking to loan him out to put him in the shop window. No negotiating tactic, just good business.

If they could get £15-20m for Bats plus get his wages off their books that would also be a consideration. Getting him to sign a new deal and then loan him out means his wages are covered but that will not help the club finances. Anyway just speculation on my part.

I was thinking on this and if we did loan him I imagine Chelsea would demand a sizeable loan fee again, so that added to his 5 million in wages would probably equate to at least 10 million for one season and then he just goes home again. This does not really make financial sense to me given there is no potential return. Loaning a striker at a high cost in January when you're desperate is one thing, but doing it in the summer before a ball is kicked seems short-sighted. Signing Gallagher by contrast I would imagine would be a lower loan fee and much lower wages, so makes a bit more sense if Roy believes he can make an impact (plus allow more time for young midfielders to develop - we don't seem to have a young striker anywhere near ready for the first team?)

Batsuayi must realize he has no future at Chelsea being as he is 4th choice striker after Werner, Giroud and Abraham. Why then should he agree to a new Chelsea contract just to strengthen their negotiating position? He will be 27 next month. This is the time for him to be getting a transfer out to another Prem team where he can expect to be first choice CF (i.e us). If he refuses to agree an extension with Chelsea, his value to them will rapidly decline after this window. I'm hoping that he refuses a contract extension and we can get him at a more realistic price (£10-15m). If he can agree to come for no more than his current Chelsea wages (rumoured to be £85k) then I believe we could afford that for one year with the contracts that are coming to an end next summer. Batsuayi will still have hopes of playing for the national team at the Euros and the 2022 World Cup. He needs game time. Edited by doombear (07 Sep 2020 10.00am)

He seems to be a player who prefers to sit on the bench for Chelsea rather than play regularly for another team and on that basis alone I don’t really want him. This all depends on his attitude. If he is content to sit on the bench and play in the cup games then there is nothing more to say.
