How popular would this be?

Better late than never.

Popularity is not an issue, necessity is.

Yep. Very necessary to stop poor people getting around. Luckily there’s no chance of prices going up as a result of this policy.

I think it will be unpopular as almost any changes that raises tax or other costs are. I can imagine the campaigns against it already.

I do though think it is the way to go and likely to be done, probably quite soon but certainly as we move to electric vehicles.

With the probability that we will develop wireless conductive charging along all main routes, which will enable vehicles to remain charged as they move, the way to charge both for the power used, and road tax, will naturally migrate to such a method. The cost per mile depending on the vehicle and the way it is driven, which can easily be captured.

This will have the added benefit of vehicles needing much smaller batteries which would only be required for the short distances where "in the road" isn't available.

It's now under development, so not as fanciful as it sounds.

It will be very popular, with the criminals.

Anyone fancy a dodgy black box only one little old lady driver?

I can see it being a bureaucratic nightmare with large scale evasion.

Tax should be simple to collect and fair.

It's a consequence of going "green". Oil is evil in many eyes but the £40 billion it brought in through duties will have to be replaced from somewhere.

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

Political suicide, there would be so much backlash to a scheme like this, conservatives would never be in power again.
If road tax was abolished and the tax on petrol removed it may stand half a chance.

Once again, like the higher vehicle tax on 4 x 4's, it's 'city' and motorway thinking. If you live in the country with no train service and only one bus on a Thursday it's a bit unfair.

Looking out from my Croydon 'green' HQ I see expensive cars with only one occupier, where they are going I regularly walk and probably arrive quicker.

I enjoyed my motoring but realised when it had to end.

After a while you get used to it and wonder why you ever bothered.

Every vehicle is a money-pit, it owns you - not the other way round.

It is much more polluting than people realise, diesel fumes do kill people.

I would like Edwardian pony and trap, but then I am stylish.

Good luck with a pony in Croydon. It needs an acre of grass. Per pony. Also, see what becky wrote. All fine not having a car, but you have other transport.
