Lewis Grabban is one we let go, he has a very good goal scoring history with several clubs outside the premier league.

Yeah I've heard Collymore in conversation with Wright on a podcast talking about how, socially speaking, Collymore was a real fish out of water at Palace at the time.

It's easy to see Collymore leaving when he could have taken over from Wright as a sliding doors moment (whatever that means, never actually seen the film), but he probably needed to be a bigger fish at a smaller club to develop his confidence as much as his ability, and probably neither would have happened at Palace.

If Coppell and Smith didn't think much of him at that stage, that'll do for me.

As I recall Stan was constantly on our bench, and regularly came on during the Wright/Bright era. However in our esteemed wisdom, we did not want to pay an instalment to Stafford Rangers based on his appearances so we decided to sell him to Southend. Wrighty went and we replaced him with Marco Gabbiadini!

Didnt Collymore go to Southend for around a 100.000 did well and they sold him to forest for around a million

Think we made more on the 2 sell on fees, Southend to Forest, Forest to Liverpool . Than the actual original transfer fee.

We might of got a sell on free from Southend to Forest but don't think we would have got one from Forest to Liverpool.

"When given a chance to play up front he would often burst through two or three defenders in spectacular fashion before blasting the ball over the top of the Whitehorse lane end."

I always remember Stan at Palace, ran with head down, with a strong shop, if only I used to to think, if only he look up before he shot but at Southend he got the coaching he needed.

Name another player thats recently gone via Southend is now doing well///

That's a good point. We've done pretty well out of players being released by other clubs in recent years.

Clyne was on the scrap heap. Cahill was without a club, McCarthy was either free or near enough and Everton certainly wanted shot of him. Ayew was also unwanted at Swansea.

Going back to Collymore, I thought we paid about £150k for him, sold him to Southend after he didn't make it here, and they sold him to Forest for something close to a record at the time - maybe over £2m? I also refuse to do the research.

I have clear memories of Collymore at Palace. Nobody could make sense of him as he seemed far too tall to be a poacher like Wright, and so surely had to be a target man, like Bright, but he was crap in the air. He also had a few games on the wing, but had no final ball at all, much to the disapproval of Messers Bright and (I think still) Wright.

When given a chance to play up front he would often burst through two or three defenders in spectacular fashion before blasting the ball over the top of the Whitehorse lane end.

Somehow at Southend he forced himself to place his shots low into the corners, and almost overnight he was a very valuable asset. The rest is history.

Southend also did well by getting Chris Powell off us for a song I think?

Back to the original question, I'm really interested who we let go who went on to do really well.

At the top end of the scale clearly Ian Wright and Kenny Samson went on to do great things.

Long time ago I remember Birchenall left us to do a good few years in the top division with Leicester.(random)

But really, struggling to think of any more youngsters, than those already posted, that we let go who have turned up in the top flight.

Massive mistake, one of the best players I have ever seen play live. No idea why he never played more games for England. Remember my mum buying me tickets for England v Wales for my tenth birthday in 1980, Devonshire played that game and I couldn’t believe even at that age how good he was.

Andy Johnson, scrap heap at Birmingham.
Valerian Ismael, purchased by us, flopped, had a great career.
