Muddy pitches

A pal recently mentioned that he'd been watching some football footage from the sixties and had forgotten how awful the pitches were in mid-winter. This reminded me of the extraordinary scenes I witnessed in a game at home to Carlisle over sixty years ago (19.12.59). After a long search I found the programme from the next home match, which described what had happened (not that I'd forgotten). Palace had been losing 1-0 with just a few minutes left. They scored, and then with time almost up they were awarded a penalty. As Glazier (the pen-name of the writer of the programme notes) described it: "No spot could be found in spite of eight or nine players searching for it. The referee decides to pace it out, and to the accompaniment of the crowd counting as he walked the 12 yards (Lord help him if he had gone 13!) Roy Summersby took the kick - is there anyone on the ground who would have taken his place? I know the answer - don't tell me - he missed, and so would you with all that hullabaloo going on. Then to finish the circus he was given the chance to take it again - and this time it was a winner!" I hope someone else admits to having witnessed all that (the attendance was 9000), otherwise I will really start to feel my age.

Before my time, but good to read anyway. I do remember though in more than one occasion referee’s having to pace out the penalty spot because they couldn’t find it, groundsman coming on with shovels during games to dig snow of the penalty area lines, those were the days That’s why I’ll always say players like Georgie Best, Rodney Marsh, Jimmy Greaves etc were the best of all time, because they could still skip passed people despite the mud

I remember seeing games played on the mudheaps at the old 'Baseball Ground' and at 'Stamford Bridge'. Players coming off the pitch covered in thick wet mud.Such surfaces would be declared as 'Heavy' on a racecourse. Edited by Willo (20 Jan 2021 1.22pm)

He did mention to me that when he was a young lad playing in the old 'Football Combination' the young chaps,including him, had to lineup on the pitch at Stamford Bridge and their task was to walk slowly down the pitch and remove all the weeds from the surface.Woe Betide any player who missed a weed!

One game always sticks in my mind when talking about the mud bath pitches of yesteryear. In the 70’s don’t know exact date Palace beat Stoke 3-2 at Selhurst. Don Rogers scored our 3rd goal on a breakaway, his white kit is spotless whereas everyone else is covered head to foot in mud. Such a gifted player, just floated over the ground.

I'm still angry about Stokes second goal, it was not a corner.

I remember when Chelsea had an open goal to shot at , goalkeeper nowhere to be seen and the ball stopped about a foot short of the goal in the mud .

I recall a Frank Sinclair back-pass which stuck in the mud and Chris Coleman ran in and fired the ball past Chelsea goalkeeper Kevin Hitchcock.
