Did Ray Lewington’s absence from the touchline contribute to Palace’s win? Perhaps the players were more relaxed without a sergeant-major barking orders from the sidelines. In my view, this is a role that would be better performed by a woman though I haven’t yet been able to come up with a candidate. Perhaps that lady off breakfast TV?

He was also missing on Tuesday, so don't think that's what won us the game. I'd put it more down to the formation change...

He has Covid. Thanks, CF, It’s to be expected in many respects right now. It amazes me how few are getting this, considering the unavoidable close contacts that are involved in organising and playing the game.

Breaking the habit of a life time and defending Roy. Ray's instructions seem to be loud and reactive. Good for a drill Sargent during a fitness test, but not that helpful to the players. Having loud praise when you've done something good always helps me but having someone constantly yell at you to run faster or (in the context of rugby) tackle that block whos 6'5 and has had a 20m run up on you - when your blowing out of your arse doesn't. As a player you just think, who's that t*** trying to teach me to suck eggs.... or in a cricketing context, having someone yell "catch it" whilst your waiting for a high ball to drop out of the sun. Going by Roy's hand gestures, the seem to be more tactically based. That's the kind of advice you want to hear. Like having an extra pair of eyes and ears to help read the game for you. (Eg go winder, come narrower, press up, drop back). In my experience football is very very bad at giving constructive instructions and having people get on each others backs... I always but it down to the frustration that builds up from not being able to smash someone in a ruck every time something pisses you off.

He has Covid. I think Roy said in an interview his wife has covid so he is isolating.

I am happy to stick my shorts on and join Roy on the touchline shouting 'go on son' for 90 minutes, if it would help.

Never knew why the field caught anything with him yelling that as the ball came down.
