Stamp collection

After some advice please lads.

Several years ago an old boy who had been renting a flat from me upped and left one day, leaving all his possessions behind.

Among those were a considerable amount of stamps. I know from speaking to him he was quite a collector and had told me that some of them were quite valuable.

I’ve had these in a cupboard for years but as clearing out due to moving house shortly, I thought maybe I should get these valued.

Knowing nothing about this sort of stuff I wondered how I would go about this. Many of the stamps (there are possibly thousands of them) are just loose. Would these need to be put in some kind of order etc? Any help is appreciated.

Tom

Most stamp dealers will value them in the hope that you will flog them to them.

The biggest is Stanley Gibbons on the Strand.

You might have to do some sorting - maybe into countries or say 1st day covers.

Had a similar thing myself. I had a large stamp album given to me many years ago as a young boy. A few years back I decided to have a massive clear out, I was undecided about the stamp album so took it to a stamp dealer who told me it was nothing special. Sold it on eBay for a few quid .

In the 1970's my grandad sold his stamp collection and bought a colour TV and a speedboat.
most stamps aren't worth much, it's just the odd few that might be worth a significant amount.
I wouldn't bother sorting into any particular order, I'd take to a stamp dealer (when CV19 allows) to give a rough idea. Then up to you whether to take the cash or put on Ebay

A neighbour tried this had hundreds of stamps, SG were not interested in going through them in the hope of finding something valuable. You have to do the work yourself I am afraid.

I have my dad's collection. Two large and full albums.
Got them valued by a local chap who'd advertised his service.

After perusing them for about an hour he said I could probably get about £40 for the lot.

He said that the collection had had no money spent on it. Nothing remotely valuable in it at all.

That was a good 15 years ago. I suspect they're worth even less today.

I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything.
