Batter is neutral so it's relevant to the men's and the women's game. Maybe that's the reason it's being adopted.

My dad made me a Palace fan. A lifer now.

Professional cricket is not mixed so in the men's game batsman is the correct term .

If they women would prefer to be called batter rather than batsman or batswoman that is there prerogative but why do the men have to change when it isn't a problem.

Chairman is fine for a man I get if a woman in that position doesn't like that term so again chairperson / chairwoman whatever is fine but don't scrub chairman if it is a man.

Surely any game played with a ball is open to question. Particularly one where itís possible to bowl a maiden over.

Ever since, in my junior school report, the only good thing they could find to say about me was "He would make a good cricketer" I have disliked the game intensely.

But, reading the other day that some bright spark in the governing body had decided to modernise the terminology made my blood boil. Now, I'm not averse to change, I spent a large part of my working life making changes to improve results. But the reason for changing the terminology in cricket is to make a new competition,"The Hundred", attractive to newcomers and to expand it's fan base.

The term 'wickets' is to be replaced by 'outs' and batsmen will be known as 'batters'. There are more, but you get the drift. Are folk really too daft to understand what a wicket is? No more sticky wickets - bonkers.

Needless to say, my mind wandered to thoughts of how football terms could be changed to make our game more understandable. Goals could become 'ins' I suppose. But I thought there might be an opportunity for some creative thinking by livelier brains than mine, so what new terms would you suggest.

Finally, if you've got the time and the inclination, this is an amusing piece on the subject by Henry Blofeld.

I think a wider/global TV audience and internet have forced games to make changes. And the money
Players have also come under scrutiny from TV cameras (particularly with football) and "playing for the decision", or "going down early/under minimal pressure" is now an accepted form of diving and cheating, amongst other 'tactics'.
It started going wrong for me with new positions, like Wing-backs.

With the increasing amount of focus on dementia recently, particularly where its being attributed to "heading" I can see a time where heading quotas in games (not just training) will be implemented & even eventually heading as being an acceptable way of propelling the ball in a given direction being dropped from the game altogether -

When / if that happens where does that leave sports like boxing ?

There is a charity game planned to test the feasibility of playing without headers.

Certainly interesting to see how this develops -

Clearly there is a significant difference between the make up of how the ball is made today compared to 40 years ago (material / weight) but if the science leads us this way eventually the sport(s) will at some point in time almost certainly have to comply
