Northerners can't afford first names.

I used to put the manager's name in front of Red and Blue but got fed up with changing it. If someone cool becomes our manager then maybe..

Red and Blue Army!

Average gate of 18,000+ that year. A record for the lowest league that I can't see being broken. (Unless they let the Glasgow pair in the league).

Looks like they did the double over us. We had a good start, certainly some high scoring games.

...one of Europe's so-called 'elite' clubs last won its country's domestic league. (Clue: based in North London).

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

Spiderman, what a jolt to the old memory. The team sheet against York City.
It was a fabulous team to watch in those days. Saint Johnny Byrne obviously the star, but I was a big fan of Len 'Chopper' Choules.

I was probably there too, although I confess I cannot remember it. I rarely if ever missed a home game in those days. Loved watching Johnny Byrne but Alfie Noakes was my favourite, just because of his enthusiasm and the way he took penalties. You would have been an idiot to try to get in their way. He just leathered the ball!

Terry Long was a neighbour of mine a few years later, long after he hung up his boots. Remember his goal against Real Madrid? I have a page of autographs from that era which was obtained for me by Brian Lewis who I knew (slightly) through cricket.

I knew there was something, the picture is becoming clearer at last.

Unfortunately I missed the Madrid game as we were still in Cyprus with my dad

Byrne my favourite player, imo probably one of the greatest Palace players ever. I loved the kit as well, iconic

My first game was a month before that with a 2-0 home defeat by Millwall. My Dad bought me a Palace scarf which was black and white (the colour of their socks). I grew up in Bermondsey so i should have supported the other lot but it was always Palace for me. We got revenge in the return fixture at the Den. Johnny Byrne was my first football hero.
